In this episode I speak with Roosevelt University of Chicago assistant professor of Psychology Matthew Skinta about how we can use vulnerability to heal shame. We explore barriers to being vulnerable and how to overcome these barriers so we can live a life more aligned to our authenticity. Matthew shares his top clinical recommendations throughout the episode on how to deal with vulnerability hangovers, self-worth issues, taking emotional risks with courage, having a successful marriage, and much more.

About Today’s Guest:

Matthew Skinta is an assistant professor of psychology at Roosevelt University in Chicago. His research and clinical work emphasize vulnerability, acceptance, and self-compassion, and he trains therapists to do better work with LGBTQ+ people around the globe to this end. He was raised Southern Baptist and in a military family, and credits entering his teens in the Netherlands (before Kansas) with the thread of hope he had that he could one day live an open, queer life. He now lives with his Parisian husband in Chicago, following 11 years in San Francisco where he had a private practice on Castro St., next door to Harvey Milk’s former camera shop.
