  • Joe Biden vs. Bernie Sanders w/ Branko Marcetic
Joining us this week to talk about the shady political history of Joe Biden is Branko Marcetic, who has penned nearly a dozen pieces on Biden for Jacobin and In These Times. • What Black Life Actually Looks Like w/ Cedric Johnson
Joining us this week to talk about the complexity of black political life and how much of the dominant discourse on “race and class” misses this complexity is Cedric Johnson. In the A-side, we discuss his latest essay “What Black Life Actually Looks Like” and analyze a recent debate that played out in the pages of New Politics on race and class.

-What is the notion of “black exceptionalism” and how does it get in the way of producing adequate theories of not only black liberation but the liberation of all?
-What is the “racial ‘we’” and how is it deployed to reproduce models of black exceptionalism?
-What kind of politics do we need to finish the struggles of the Reconstruction era to the present?

In the B-Side that follows, available for patrons of DPS, we discuss the New Deal — was it racist and do universal policies serve to reproduce racial inequities? Lastly, what should socialists make of the ADOS and Reparations movements?

Cedric Johnson is one of the best commentators on these topics, so tune in and get smart!

    --------------------------
Joining me this week is Adaner Usmani. We discuss his latest essay in Jacobin (co-authored with Connor Kilpatrick) titled "The New Communists." They argue that it's time to leave the iconography and inward-facing legacy of 1917 behind and forge a socialism that addresses people's lived concerns in 2018.

  • Neoliberalism: Bad Ideas or Material Forces? w/ Aaron Major [TEASER]
*** This is a free sample of this week's B-Side, available in full for patrons of DPS. Join today to hear the full episode and receive access to our entire back catalog. Support the new left agenda today: http://www.patreon.com/deadpundits ***
This week's B-Side features part 2 of our series on neoliberalism. In this installment, Aaron Major joins us to discuss his essay, "Ideas without Power," from Catalyst. We discuss the "ideational" model of conceptualizing the neoliberal turn, which places the role of ideas over material forces. We then offer some alternative ways of studying the turn to neoliberalism as a set of material constraints and contradictions of postwar capitalism.
This goes beyond dusty academic debates -- if socialists want to know how to go beyond neoliberalism, we must have a grounded understanding of how we got here.

Ed Rooksby, Tutor in Politics and Social Sciences at Ruskin College in Oxford, joins us to talk about structural reform and socialist strategy. We kick things off with a discussion of SYRIZA and socialist strategy along with a healthy dose of Neo-Marxian state theory.
-How do we navigate the intractable debate between reform and revolution?
    -What is a non-reformist reform?

Season 2 of DPS has officially wrapped. Season 3 will launch in the end of April 2019 featuring a new website, weekly YouTube videos along with articles and blog posts. In the meantime, patrons will be getting a weekly B-Side and the free feed will revisit classic episodes of DPS. -----------------
On this week’s episode, Freddie deBoer and I analyze the hyper-woke, virtue-signaling sect of the left, which has claimed an insignificant segment of cyberspace as its sovereign territory in absence of any real power in society. We also share our thoughts about campus activism, the “No Platform” technique and left censorship. Resist the allure of LARP culture and learn how to win a real socialist platform. Tune in to find out how.
