How We Seeez It! Episode 344: Big Trouble in Little China (1986)
“When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, looks you crooked in the eye, and asks if you’ve paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye and remember what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like that: ‘Have ya paid your dues, Jack?’ ‘Yessir, the check is in the mail.’” — Jack Burton
John Carpenter’s urban fantasy action-adventure turns 40 this year. Starring Kurt Russell and set in San Francisco’s Chinatown, Big Trouble in Little China was released in 1986 without the fanfare it deserved. It wasn’t the hit it should have been, but it found a devoted audience during the home-video era and eventually became a cult classic.
Not only is it incredibly rewatchable, but repeated viewings may be required to fully understand its greatness. Join us as we discuss the movie, its wonderfully strange world, and why Jack Burton may not be quite the hero he thinks he is.

How We Seeez It! Episode 342: Independence Day (1996)
“You really think you can do all that bullshit you just said?” – Captain Steven Hiller
Summer blockbusters and July just go hand in hand. Back in 1996, we got a taste of that with this one. Released on July 3, 1996, Independence Day became the year’s top-grossing film. It is a worldwide fight for humanity’s continued existence — even if most of that fight is shown from the United States — and we follow a few key players as they battle against the invasion.
We cover our thoughts on it, and there is so much to talk about with this one, so join us for the discussion. And don’t forget about our cocktails for this episode. There are some good ones.

How We Seeez It! Episode 339, The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
“I’m just one stomach flu away from my goal weight.” - Emily Charlton
Director David Frankel’s stylish and endlessly rewatchable(?) look into ambition, identity, and the compromises we make along the way. With Meryl Streep’s iconic Miranda Priestly, Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs, Stanley Tucci’s scene-stealing Nigel, and Emily Blunt’s unforgettable Emily, The Devil Wears Prada still has plenty to talk about 20 years later. Join us as we discuss the film’s lasting appeal, Andy’s choices, the great Nate debate, Miranda’s power, and whether the ending wraps things up a little too neatly. Do Steve and Noah see eye to eye, or are they walking different runways? And of course, don’t forget about the cocktails for this episode. Apparently, high fashion pairs well with caffeine.

“Sometimes the story we tell ourselves becomes the truth.” — Aiko Nakajima
Writer and director Hikari’s story explores companionship and personal connection, along with the exceptional emotional authenticity of Brendan Fraser’s performance. The movie’s touching exploration of loneliness and human connection in modern life, or at least modern Japan, makes it enjoyable and engaging, and will have you contemplating ideas about culture and your own connections. “You don’t realize it, do you? You’re not a hero. You’re a symbol now. Hope for an entire city.” — Jacques Duquesne
This week, we discuss the second season of Disney+ and Marvel’s latest miniseries, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. It’s a mix of major and minor stories that all seem to revolve around Matt Murdock/Daredevil vs. Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin, with plenty of players on both sides. How We Seeez It! Episode 335, A Knight’s Tale (2001)
“You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have absolutely... been found wanting.” — Wat, Roland, Kate, and Chaucer
Going back 25 years for this one. From 2001, we have a fun medieval sports love story. Heath Ledger leads the group, but he might get overrun by some of the other cast members: Laura Fraser, Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk, and Paul Bettany. Surprisingly fun and touching all in one.
