How Well, Not How Far! - Matthew 25:21

How Well, Not How Far
Matthew 25:21
“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant...”
It is natural to look at life and measure progress by distance. We often think in terms of how far we have gone, how many achievements we have collected, how many years we have served, or how much ground we have covered. But Scripture reminds us that God’s measure is different. He is not impressed by distance traveled, but by the faithfulness and sincerity with which we walk.
When the Bible says “Well done, good and faithful servant,” the emphasis is on well done, not far done. God does not reward the one who ran the longest, but the one who ran faithfully and obediently. It is possible to be busy yet not fruitful, active yet not aligned with the will of God. Jesus made this clear when He said many would claim to have done great things in His name, yet He would say, “I never knew you.” They went far in activity, but not well in relationship.
Throughout Scripture, the people God commended were not always the ones who went the furthest, but the ones who walked rightly. Saul ruled for many years, yet failed in obedience. David, though imperfect, walked with a heart that sought God. The difference was not distance but devotion.
Our journey with God is not a competition. Some advance quietly, unseen by many but fully known by the Father. Others cover great ground publicly. But on the final day, God will not ask, “How far did you go?” He will ask, “How well did you follow Me?” Did you obey? Did you stand for truth? Did you love sincerely? Did you serve with a pure heart?
Even in ministry, the temptation to measure by “far” is strong. We count numbers, positions and achievements. Yet God looks for faithfulness, purity, humility and sound doctrine. A short life lived well for Christ carries more weight in eternity than a long life lived without Him.
This truth brings peace. You do not need to outrun anyone. You only need to walk faithfully with the Lord today. If your steps are aligned with His Word, then you are progressing well, even if it feels slow.
Take a moment to reflect: Are you more focused on how far you seem to be going, or how well you are walking? Bring your heart back to what matters most. God desires obedience more than activity, and holiness more than visibility. His final commendation will never be “How far!” but “Well done.”
If you are reading this and have not yet begun this walk with Christ, the invitation is open. A life that ends with “Well done” begins with submitting to the gospel. God calls all people to come to Him through Jesus Christ. Salvation is not by feelings or personal achievements, but by obeying the simple, clear steps revealed in Scripture.
The Bible teaches that we must hear the gospel, believe in Christ, repent of our sins, confess His name and be baptized for the remission of sins. Through that new birth, God adds you to the church and begins a new journey with you. That is where “walking well” truly begins.
If your conscience is calling you, respond today. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Christ stands ready to save, forgive and guide you into a life that is not measured by how far you go, but by how well you follow Him.
