How the rest of the world sees Ferguson

In many ways, the chaotic situation in Ferguson, Mo., seems like something that shouldn't happen in America. As WorldViews has noted, many of the hallmarks of the conflict are reminiscent of scenes from the Arab Spring and the Ukraine crisis – our former colleague Max Fisher has even wondered how American journalists would cover Ferguson, if only it weren't happening "here."

There are plenty of foreign journalists reporting on Ferguson, however, and for them, Ferguson is international news. Their coverage of the shooting of Michael Brown and the subsequent unrest can offer a refreshing viewpoint on America's many problems. They can also reveal a lot about how such disturbances are viewed at home.

When The Media Treats White Suspects And Killers Better Than Black Victims.

This makes the hashtag #IfTheyGunnedMeDown so powerful. It's sad that some people have taken it to another level.

When The Media Treats White Suspects And Killers Better Than Black Victims.

Spining Crime in America. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/14/media-black-victims_n_5673291.html

This is by no means standard media protocol, but it happens frequently, deliberately or not. News reports often headline claims from police or other officials that appear unsympathetic or dismissive of black victims. Other times, the headlines seem to suggest that black victims are to blame for their own deaths, engaging in what critics sometimes allege is a form of character assassination. When contrasted with media portrayal of white suspects and accused murderers, the differences are more striking. News outlets often choose to run headlines that exhibit an air of disbelief at an alleged white killer's supposed actions. Sometimes, they appear to go out of their way to boost the suspect's character, carrying quotes from relatives or acquaintances that often paint even alleged murderers in a positive light.

U.S., Police, Police Shooting  1-713-955-0464

For three days, demonstrations and police crackdown has taken over the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri, where police shot and killed Michael Brown, 18, an unarmed black teenager, on Saturday afternoon. Brown was about to begin college. After a peaceful vigil on Sunday, rioting and looting led to 32 arrests by police in full riot gear. Another 11 to 15 people were reportedly arrested over Monday night. As of earlier today, the Federal Aviation Administration has banned flights over Ferguson airspace “to provide a safe environment for law enforcement activities.

”The hashtag #IfTheyGunnedMeDown has gone viral on Twitter, where young people of color are protesting Brown' death.
