The truth about the Confederacy in the United States

Jeffery Robinson, the ACLU’s top racial justice expert, discusses the dark history of Confederate symbols across the country and outlines what we can do to learn from our past and combat systemic racism.

The Confederate States of America (CSA), commonly referred to as the Confederate States (C.S. or CS) or the Confederacy, was an unrecognized breakaway state[1] that fought against the United States during the American Civil War.

Betsy DeVos Demands Schools Fully Reopen — No Distance Learning, No Part-Time Classrooms

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos joined a call with state governors Tuesday to discuss the reopening of public schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, she offered a very rigid response to suggestions of creative approaches that would attempt to educate children with minimal exposure in order to reduce viral spread.

According to the Associated Press, Devos addressed ideas like distance learning and limited classroom instruction. She found neither of these acceptable, saying instead that schools must be “fully operational” when they reopen for the new school year. Specifically, she insisted that schools should be prepared to offer five days of instruction per week.

Across the nation, educators are seeking the best available balance of instruction and safety. For guidance on that aspect, DeVos left districts to fend for themselves, saying, “Schools must reopen, they must be fully operational. And how that happens is best left to education and community leaders.”

However, she also criticized the urgent efforts by educators to find safe ways to finish the 2019-2020 school year. She called distance learning a disaster, and said that schools “didn’t figure out how to serve students…just gave up and didn’t try.”

Speaking on the subject Tuesday afternoon, President Donald Trump also pushed for opening schools to students, saying that this is what parents and kids both want. The CDC advised in May that fully reopening schools, with activities, full classrooms, and shared materials carries the highest level of risk, and distance learning the lowest.

Democrats welcome an increasingly diverse America; Republicans aren’t so sure

Barriers Experienced by Americans that Prevented Them from VotingHistory Voter Suppression for GOP Win/White/GOP https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/10/29/voter-suppression-tactics-in-the-age-of-trump

Decades ago, amid the most overt privations of Jim Crow, African-Americans used to tell a joke about a black Harvard professor who moves to the Deep South and tries to register to vote. A white clerk tells him that he will first have to read aloud a paragraph from the Constitution. When he easily does so, the clerk says that he will also have to read and translate a section written in Spanish. Again he complies. The clerk then demands that he read sections in French, German, and Russian, all of which he happens to speak fluently. Finally, the clerk shows him a passage in Arabic. The professor looks at it and says, “My Arabic is rusty, but I believe this translates to ‘Negroes cannot vote in this county.’ ”

Old jokes have lately been finding renewed salience. Literacy tests, poll taxes, and grandfather clauses, once the most common mechanisms for disadvantaging minority voters, have been consigned to the history books, but one need look no further than the governor’s race in Georgia to see their modern equivalents in action.

Views of President Trump Why White America Love President Donald Trump?

After two years in office, the public’s view of President Trump remains negative. As of late December 2018, when this survey was conducted, only 36% of Americans reported that they held a favorable view of President Trump. Six in ten (60%) of the general public said their view of the president was unfavorable.
