This tragic loss of life, is something that an entrepreneur might not think about too often, but after an experience like this, it’s hard not replay it in your mind. It will impact your decision making, and hopefully help you become a stronger leader, and not miss an opportunity tell your employees how grateful you are for their help.

Read the original blog post here “The First Tragedy, I Didn’t Sign Up for This.”

    From the original story:

I’ve been told that people like finality in things. I know I do. There was no finality to Billy’s death, to exactly what happened, unless you created something on your own. My finality was that I’d put him in a situation that caused him to crash – and die. It would be natural – and understandable – for his family to hold me responsible too, I thought. I might a little, or maybe more than a little, if I were them.

I hadn’t signed up for this. No one had. But I was in charge. This happened on my watch. It was the first tragedy.

  • Ryan Keepman, $100 Million CEO Managing Remotely – Episode 31

Ryan Keepman is the second-generation President of Evans Transportation, a transportation & logistics management company.

After graduating from UW Madison in 2004, Ryan began his career in sales where he learned the ropes working for Pitney Bowes selling postage meters essentially door to door. From there, he moved to Tri-State Expedited, a freight brokerage company, where his sales career exploded.

Ryan’s Dad, Charlie, and his partner Marty started Evans together in a small, second story office above a storefront in Hartland WI.  That was 1985.  Ryan joined the company in 2007 and started in the accounting department, learning how the business’ finances worked before moving to sales.  During his tenure, Evans has nearly tripled in size to more than $100 Million in annual revenue.  In 2018, Ryan became President when Marty retired from the business.

Mike and Ryan cover a ton of great stuff in this episode, including Ryan’s experience as a UW Football player, his unique birthday parties and his belief in building success one brick at a time.  In addition, Ryan talks about the challenges, and opportunities, that come from living full time in Florida while running his $100 Million company remotely in Wisconsin.  You’re in for a real treat with this episode as Ryan is the “Real Deal” when it comes to an ambitious, caring and humble leader.

Read the original post I wrote with more details about “10 Leadership Habits that Work, for me at Least” here:  https://mikemalatesta.com/mikes-blog/10-leadership-habits-that-work-for-me-at-least/

There are so many people writing about Leadership these days that it feels close to impossible to know who’s right about what Leadership really looks like – and who’s not.  There are tons of varying opinions, and most sound convincing.  It’s everywhere.  There’s Leadership advice from Ex-Navy Seals, Corporate CEO’s, Unicorn Start-Up Founders, Shark Tank Celebrities and from people like me that you’ve never heard of. Impressive people (author excluded) with amazing Leadership experiences and perspectives.

I read a book called “You Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins [highly recommend], a former Navy Seal ++.  In it, he describes our built-in self-limiting belief system, he calls it our ‘mind governor,’ which causes most of us to perform at only 40% of our true capability.

  • Tommy Tank, Becoming a Model in your 50s – Episode 30

Tommy Tank is the founder and President of Tommy Tank Life After 50, a one of a kind fitness experience gym and brand that is built on Tommy’s passion for fitness and his belief that “you have one body, own it.”

Tommy started his company, and new career, at age 56 after a long career as a manufacturer and distributer of manufacturing machinery.  A self-described “blue collar” kid, Tommy began working in the trades as an apprentice, where he happened to be in the right place at the right time as the age of industrial machine automation was just beginning.  He learned how to design, operate and program machinery and that led to him starting his first company.  When the global recession hit that company hard, Tommy began thinking about how he could transform his passion for coaching and fitness into a new business.

Mike and Tommy cover a ton of great stuff in this episode, including how Tommy had the courage and confidence that he could become a fitness expert in his fifties, his belief that kettle bells are the best exercises you can do and how he hopes that his new Turkish Get-Up machine will bring the benefits of working with kettle balls to the masses.  On top of that, Tommy talks about how becoming a fitness expert has required him to “look the part” and how that’s led to him becoming a model, an author and highly sought-after Life After Fifty personality.  You’re in for a real treat with this episode as Tommy epitomizes the “entrepreneur that is out to change the world” persona.

Tommy also talks about how to figure out your metabolic burn rate, here is that calculation he mentions in the show.

Take 10 times your weight in kilograms, plus 6.25 times your height in centimeters, minus 5 times your age, plus 5.

  • Mike Gosman, Betting on Strong Families to Rebuild Milwaukee – Episode 29

Mike Gosman is the Executive Director of ACTS Housing, a non-profit with a mission of empowerment through homeownership.

Mike graduated from Indiana University with a degree in History.  As a student, Mike was heavily involved in the Memorial Union Board, where he had the opportunity to plan major campus events that included visits from artists like Maya Angelou, bands like the Red-Hot Chili Peppers and sports legends like Indian’s own Coach Bobby Knight.

After school, Mike moved to New York City to begin his career, where he struggled to find the kind of work he wanted. Eventually feeling the need to be further “credentialed,” Mike went to law school at the University of Chicago and practiced law as an associate for 3 years before deciding that he wasn’t making the kind of difference that he thought he could.

I’m Joe DeNucci, Mike’s Podcast producer and Blog collaborator.

Mike M and Mike G cover a ton of great stuff in this episode, including how Mike took a two-year law school sabbatical to play poker and how a chance networking encounter led him, first, to volunteering for ACTS Housing and eventually joining the organization as its Assistant Director.  He also shares how he first thought about the renting versus owning of a house issue as “a math problem” before he knew about the mental health and family decision making problems that often accompany the chaos of not being certain about where, how long and under what conditions a family will be living.
