“What if buying a home today isn’t just about income… but about who can help you?”
In 2026, that’s becoming the reality.
A new survey from LendingTree shows that more Americans—especially younger buyers—are relying on financial help just to afford a home.
A Growing Dependence on Help
Let’s start with one big shift:
👉 In 2023, about 35% of homeowners received help with their down payment.
👉 In 2026, that number has jumped to 40%.
And for younger buyers, it’s even more striking:
78% of Gen Z homeowners needed help
56% of millennials relied on assistance
Compare that to just 12% of baby boomers.
👉 That gap shows how much harder it’s become to buy a home without support.
It’s Not Just About Income
You might think lower-income buyers need more help—but that’s not the full story.
42% of buyers earning over $100,000 still received assistance
43% of those earning under $30,000 also got help
👉 So the challenge isn’t just income—it’s affordability across the board.
The 20% Down Payment Is Out of Reach
Traditionally, buyers aim for a 20% down payment.
Only 23% of buyers reach that level
More than half put down less than 20%
And 16% buy with no down payment at all
👉 That’s a huge shift from past generations.
How Much Help Are Buyers Getting?
For many, assistance isn’t small—it’s significant.
About 50% say help covered at least 40% of their down payment
Some report 60%, even 80% coverage
👉 Without that support, many simply couldn’t buy.
35% of buyers say they wouldn’t own a home at all without it.
Where Is the Money Coming From?
16% of all buyers get help from parents
Nearly 1 in 4 millennials and Gen Z buyers rely on them
Inheritance or trust funds
👉 It’s a gift, not a loan.
The Emotional Side of Buying a Home
Financial help doesn’t just affect numbers—it affects feelings.
Many buyers say they feel:
But not everyone feels comfortable.
👉 About 1 in 5 Gen Z buyers say they feel embarrassed asking for help.
A Trend That’s Here to Stay
Looking ahead, this pattern is likely to continue.
46% of Americans plan to help a family member buy a home
Even more among younger generations
👉 That means financial support may become a normal part of homebuying.
Buying a home is still a dream for many Americans…
But in 2026, it’s no longer just about saving money.
👉 It’s about access to support, timing, and opportunity.
The question is no longer:
“Can you afford it—on your own?”
