Dr. Jeremy Cruz and Dr. Victor Carmona, who both teach theology and religious studies, talk about what’s happening at the U.S.-Mexico border, and about the work churches and local communities have taken on to help migrants. In the fall of 2019, Dr. Cruz and Dr. Carmona both participated in La Jornada por la Justicia in El Paso, TX and in Ciudad Juarez, MX. The pilgrimage was organized by Catholic leaders and included participants from all over the country.
Our guests also remind us why we need to be counted and urge us to fill out our 2020 U.S. Census forms, which can be done online, by phone or via mail: https://2020census.gov/en.html .
Chisme, bochinche, tea—whatever you call it, gossip has a cultural importance in our communities. Dr. Neomi DeAnda, Dr. Jacqueline Hidalgo, and Dr. Matilde Moros dish on what Dr. DeAnda describes as communication behavior that functions to “reveal what is missing in social systems or when someone steps outside the boundaries of social systems".
Looking through a Latina Lens
It is important to read the Bible through a self-consciously Latina interpretive, or hermeneutical, lens. In this three-episode podcast, Dr. Jacqueline Hidalgo and Dr. Kay Higuera Smith discuss the moment when they first realized how much context matters in thinking about the Bible. In the third episode of this podcast, they turn their hermeneutical lens on another genre: the song “Baby It’s Cold Outside” by Frank Loesser. Turns out that meaning can be double-edged.
