She is also the author of Pox Americana: The Great Smallpox Epidemic of 1775-82. She teaches at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of History.

In early September, downtown Troy was captured by the spectacle of steampunk fashion, fantasy and fabrications known as the Enchanted City Steampunk Festival. Now in its 5th year, the festival magically transforms the historic blocks of downtown into a "cosplay" alternative reality where Victorian fancy meets modern technology.
