  • Sept. 17 NYC Climate March With Cornel West, Green Party, Fridays For Future, AOC
    On Sunday September 17, an estimated 75,000 people marched in the streets of New York City in the largest climate event in the US since the onset of COVID. The march called for President Biden to take much stronger action against fossil fuels, including fulfilling his campaign pledge to stop issuing permits for fossil fuel extraction on federal lands and for him to formally declare a climate emergency and to take Executive Action at outlined in ClimatePresident.org. This segment starts off at the beginning of the march with some brief audio of two candidates vying for the Green Party nomination for President, Dr. Cornel West and Jasmine Sherman, followed by remarks by two Green Party officials, Joey Naham and Gloria Mattera from New York. We conclude with speeches made at the rally at the end of the march, from a student organizer with Fridays for Future and Congressmember Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.

    You are invited to enjoy New York Folklore's annual Folklife Festival on October 1st in Albany's Washington Park. Anne Rappaport Berliner, the staff Folklorist, describes the many performers, demonstrators, musicians, and activities all happening at the Festival. Hear about tasting a variety of international foods, as well as trying crafts including Chinese paper-cutting, Afghan kite making and flying, and even Double Dutch jump-roping. Anne also invites folks to submit stories, recipes, photo essays, and such for the organization's journal.   • Honest Weight Food Co-op Gives Corn to StoryHarvest
    This Saturday, StoryHarvest is celebrating the harvest with a focus on corn, one of the few grains native to the Americas. Amy Halloran and Ellie Markovitch will begin September 23rd by hosting a Cooking with Corn workshop, and will make corn bread for the main StoryHarvest event in the afternoon starting at 2pm. The Honest Weight Food Co-op generously donated a boatload of corn products for StoryHarvest. Thank you co-op!     On Thursday, September 14, 2023, Hudson Mohawk Magazine Roaming Labor Correspondent Willie Terry was at a 'Starbucks Day of Action' gathering sponsored by the Public Employees Federation (PEF). The event took place at Latham Starbucks Coffee at 549 Troy-Schenectady Road. PEF members collected customer signatures to petition support for all Starbucks workers' right to organize a union. In this labor segment, Willie interviewed two PEF members, Danielle Bridger, PEF Region 8 Coordinator Bruce Giddings, Executive Board Member, and Divison 169 Treasurer, about their views of the Starbucks workers' struggle to unionize.

    Leading up to the UN Special Summit on Climate was a week of climate action in New York City, the highlight being a march to End Fossil Fuels. The Sunday march brought out an estimated 75,000 people, the largest climate event in the U.S. since COVID hit. The rally and march was controversial among some climate groups since it expressly called on President Biden to do more to halt fossil fuels, including declaring a climate emergency.
    Mark Dunlea was at these marches and reported on them. Sina Basila Hickey interviewed him about what he experienced and the messaging of the event.
