  • Ukrainian, Russian Activists To Speak On Need For Ukrainian Soliday On Sept. 9 (radio)
    On Saturday, September 9, at 6:30 PM, there will be a livestream at the Oakwood Community Center in Troy of a talk by progressive Ukrainian and Russian activists in support of Ukraine’s struggle for self-determination. Speakers for the Ukraine Solidarity Network include Hanna Perekhoda , Denys Bondar (a Ukrainian writer and physics professor) and Ilya Budraitskis. The Troy event will include a discussion of local organizing in solidarity with Ukraine. This interview is with Hanna and Ilya. Hanna Perekhoda is a Ukrainian socialist who grew up in the city of Donetsk in the eastern Donbas region. Ilya Budraitskis is a recently exiled Russian socialist and author of Dissidents Among Dissidents: Ideology, Politics and the Left in Post-Soviet Russia. With Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.     Hear about three books for kids that explore different perspectives on history, ancient art, and animals. The picture book "Tell Me a Story Babushka" has a Ukranian grandmother describing to her daughter the horrors of the 1932 Holodmor famine in Ukraine (Schmidt, ill. Barghigiani; 2022). "Ancestory" shows pictures of ancient rock carvings and paintings from around the worls, with background information and glossary (Salyar, 2023). "What Animals Want: The Five Freedoms in Action" encourages readers to consider the needs of non-humans from the anmals' perspectives, and offers tips for taking action to improve the lives of pets, farm animals, and wild animals(Pearce, 2021).
