  • Climate Groups Push National Grid to Support Clean Renewable Energy Not Fossil Fuels
    Wednesday May 31 was a busy day down at the state Capitol. In part one, we cover protests by climate activists at National Grid’s electrification conference at the Renessaine Hotel across from the Capitol. The groups were protesting National Grid for not doing more to transition to clean energy. A top priority for the climate movement is the NY Heat Act, which would direct state agencies like the Public Service Commission to incorporate the new climate law, CLCPA, into their policies. Dinosaurs were part of the performance art. We hear from Mary Finneran, one of the dinosaurs, Pete Looker, one of the corporate lobbyists, climate youth activist and college student Katie Marshall, and Betta Broad of New Yorkers for Clean Power.

    The debt crisis deal recently announced by President Biden and GOP House Majority Leader McCarthy continues to generate controversy across the political spectrum, with the outcome of a final resolution still fluid. The deal freezes funding for domestic programs and increases work requirements for food while raising funding for the military and curbing the IRS' ability to pursue rich tax evaders.   • Lansingburgh Books & Activities for May 2023
    In honor of "Global Parents Day" on June 1st, Michael Gregg from Troy Public Library's Lansingburgh branch recommends four novels that present different takes on families. "French Exit: A Tragedy of Manners" (Patrick deWitt, 2018)is a "hilarious novel" about a woman and her son; "The Nest" (Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney, 2016) is a "zany take on family squabbles"; "The Good Father" (Noah Hawley, 2012) explores a father dealing with a son who tries to assasinate a president, weaving both psychological drama and history tidbits on assasinations; and "News of the World" (Paulette Jiles, 2016; filmed in 2021 featuring Tom Hanks) explores a post-Civil War story of how a traveling newsreader bonds with a girl he is entrusted with returning to her family. Library activities discussed include a new seed library, the annual summer reading program, Thursday "Shorts Out Loud" events ocmbining music and a read-aloud short story, and more.     First, Mark Dunlea reports on NY Renews, Citizen Action, PAUSE, and others held a press conference at the State Capitol on Thursday, May 25 to call for lawmakers to pass key Climate, Jobs, and Justice bills,
    Then, Congress Park in Saratoga Springs, NY is more than a beautiful place to relax, take pictures and watch the ducks. It is also used by awareness groups to connect with the local community.
    Later on, In part three, Labor Segment, Roaming Labor Correspondent Willie Terry continues his discussion about African Liberation Day with December 12th Organizer David Daniels.
    After that, In this segment of “Talking with Poets”, Thom Francis speaks with publisher, Alan Catlin. We hear Alan reading his poem “Hollywierd”.
    Finally, retired meteorologist Hugh Johnson joins us once again for a look at the Mechanicville Tornado that ripped though the area.
