  • Consumer Brands Taken To Court Over Recycling Claims, Role in Plastic Pollution Crisis
A major driver of plastic pollution is single-use plastic packaging used by consumer brands like Coca-Cola, Nestle, PepsiCo, Unilever, and many of the household brands you may be familiar with. Of the nearly 400 million tonnes of virgin plastic produced annually, 40% is destined to become single-use packaging, and less than 10% will be recycled.
Now, Earth Island Institute is taking these consumer brands to court over their role in plastic pollution and misleading the public to believe that the plastic waste generated by their packaging is recycled.
In this week's Plastic PSA we speak with Sumona Majumdar, attorney and General Council for Earth Island Institute, the entity leading the lawsuits against consumer brands.
A correction to the story: Coca-Cola produces 2.9 million tonnes of plastic waste annually.
