Discussion

We are introduced to the legend of Huma through the Song of Huma at the same time as we are introduced to the Heroes of the Lance in Dragons of Autumn Twilight. The tale itself is a parable, a tale meant to temper hearts and minds, focusing those on the challenge at hand, rather than diverting from their difficult course for momentary comforts. In Dragonlance, Huma was an aspirational legend, which was not unlike King Arthur. Knights would reflect on his legend and it would refocus them to their greater purpose. The people, their order, and their gods all over themselves. The Oath and the Measure are seemingly impossible to live up to, but My Honor is My Life, Est Sularis Oth Mithas is the very embodiment of Huma through his actions.

I am not one to celebrate sacrificing one's life for any reason. I believe in choosing life as it’s the only one we have, but I can’t help but reflect on the men and women in our own history who have done just that and find reverence for their acts. It is through this understanding that I believe Sturm Brightblade strives to be like his legendary hero, Huma Dragonbane. To face the insurmountable, never wavering, knowing that there is a greater good to come from his sacrifice. In Dragonlance, this was certainly true, for with Huma’s sacrifice, he was able to defeat Takhisis, the Queen of Darkness, and through Sturm’s, he was able to alter the very Oath and Measure that the Knights of Solamnia all live by, allowing the Whitestone Council to defeat the Queen of Darkness yet again over a thousand years later!

As with the best of legends, they are steeped in what makes us human. Our passions, our creativity, and our destructive natures. The legend of Huma is no different. Though it has altered over time. The original tale as told in the Dragonlance Chronicles and game modules is wildly different from the version in the novel The Legend of Huma. Then when Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman returned with their Dragonlance Destinies trilogy, they returned to their original version nearly forty years later. I will do my best, as with the retelling of any legend, to distill the essence of the two versions, and in doing so, hopefully reveal the purpose behind the incredible character of Huma Dragonbane.

The original legend has Huma, a young Solamnic Knight, not of noble birth, rising as far as he can in the order of the Crown. He does not have the propeller lineage to rise to the order of the Rose. He finds himself traveling the war torn land, trying to ease the suffering of its people.
