Who Do You Think You Are?

Human speech is a cracked kettle

Listen Later

“Whereas the truth is that fullness of soul can sometimes overflow in utter vapidity of language, for none of us can ever express the exact measure of his needs or his thoughts or his sorrows; and human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we tap crude rhythms for bears to dance to, while we long to make music that will melt the stars.”

This quote says something to me about longing. We long to express the intensity of our experience. There are things we want to say that we can’t put words to, feelings without descriptions. Our spirits and imaginations want magic, want many lives, yearn for thousands of experiences, but our time is limited, our language is limited, and we come down to earth as it were, faced with the realism of one ordinary moment turning into the next.
