🐾 Paw Prints — Winter 2025 Newsletter Summary
From the President: The Humane Society of Greene County (HSGC) remains a fully independent, volunteer-run nonprofit with no government or national funding. All operations depend on local donations and grants. In October, the society celebrated its 11,000th cat neutered through its ongoing spay/neuter program. President Cindie McCulloch thanked supporters for keeping the pet food pantry stocked and helping local residents care for their animals.
Legislative Update: Ohio Senate Bill 252 proposes banning cat declawing except when medically necessary. Violations could bring fines from $1,000 to $2,500.
Pet Care & Education:
- Hearing facts: Cats have 32 ear muscles and dogs up to 18, allowing exceptional hearing far beyond human ability. Both species are born deaf, gaining hearing within the first few weeks.
- Why Spay/Neuter? Healthier pets, reduced aggression, longer lifespans, and fewer homeless animals.
- Adoption reminder: Avoid online pet scams—visit the Greene County Animal Shelter to meet adoptable pets like Chunk and others. “Rescued is the best breed there is!”
Holiday Pet Safety: Safe treats include eggs, turkey, salmon, and pumpkin. Avoid chocolate, grapes, garlic, coffee, and sugar-free foods. Keep pets away from tinsel and poinsettias.
In Memoriam Donations: Tributes were made in memory of Linda Hughes, Susan Honeyman, Art Guyton, and Deborah Downey.
Community Spotlight: A fundraiser at Caesar Creek Winery supported HSGC’s rescued donkeys Big Wooly and Doug with games, food, and meet-and-greets.
