Preserving and Abandoning
As leaders, we need to decide on some things needing to be preserved and some things that need to be let go.
Preserving
The most significant thing leaders need to preserve is engaged employees and the required skills. The right people.
They are creating safety – psychological safety. Employees need to think their opinion matters and are valued, mainly when they express an opinion.
Mental health problems at work cost an estimated $11 billion from an Australian government report in February 2022).
Work Place Health and safety has been talking about health and physical protection for a long time, but the discussion around psychological safety is a more recent phenomenon.
It is easy to talk about psychological safety and inclusion, but it is much harder o make it happen.
The Vision for the organisation needs to be preserved and communicated. What journey is the organisation on, and what is the Strategy for organisation sustainability and Growth?
The Vision for the Organization starts the story with where the organisation is going.
As Growth occurs and new people join the organisation, the actual core of the journey, the values and the ethics need to be maintained.
As part of this, a simple and easy to understanding story is required for the purpose of the organisation. The story needs to be told many times until it becomes the vocabulary of the leaders and the broader organisation.
The leadership style that is preferred is a situation leadership style. The Leader needs to adapt to the situation. What is appropriate in a particular case may not be applicable in another.
e.g. Health Sector: sometimes lives are at stake, and a directive style is required, but in other situations, mistakes may be OK, and a more consultative style is best.
Organisations are complex, and one leadership style is not adequate.
Sometimes people are not the right fit for the emerging organisation. Psychological safety means telling the truth. Some people can retrain and move in a new direction for their careers. However, some people cannot be retrained and need to find an organisation that better suits their skills and the stage in their career.
Abandonment
It is related to the goal and Strategy of the organisation.
The environment is constantly changing. The end game may not modify, but the way forward may require different skills and people. Individuals may invest a lot of time and emotion into a project, but the requirement may decrease, and therefore separation can be difficult.
Careers can often be packaged up so that personal and professional objectives are achieved. Once this is done, it may be best for all concerned to try something else. Businesses do this for projects which have a material sunk cost but need to be dumped.
Change needs to be thought out and done well; otherwise, people may not be treated with an appropriate amount of respect. Individuals invest time and effort, and some recognition for this is required.
Some decisions are very unpopular. People invest career years, and companies invest money. Regardless, the complex issues and critical criteria for driving the organisation forward need to be addressed.
Strategic alignment in an organisation is imperative. Actions the leadership are focused on the need to be aligned with the overall priorities of the organisation. Supporting this should be a strong narrative and strategic direction of communication.
In summary
In the journey of working towards a vision, there are some things that should be preserved and others that need to be abandoned.
