For today's episode we’re talking about mixed-status families- families where some members are U.S Citizens, and others are undocumented or have other forms of temporary status. This is a group that’s often overlooked, but their struggles are REAL, especially when it comes to education, work, and their overall well-being.

We will be telling the story of Carlos–a pseudonym given to protect his identity and privacy–while discussing the lasting psychological and health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on immigrant children. Despite the growing number of unaccompanied immigrant minors crossing the border, news on these instances has dwindled (Venta et al., 2023). Covering the experiences of immigrant minors during the pandemic remains necessary, as many are still dealing with the aftermath.

This episode discusses the impact of anti -immigration policy on immigrant mental health through stories of resilience.

This group produced an episode investigating the reports produced by the City of Chandler government officials and police department following the 1997 Chandler Round Up.

A deeper dive into the 1997 Chandler Roundup event that explores primary source documents, including a Border Patrol report produced in the aftermath of the event. This student group explored the impacts on mixed-status families. Take a listen!

This student group concentrated on the question “What was the long-term psychological impact of the Chandler Roundup on the community?” By showcasing voices from the Latinx community who resisted and protested the 1997 Chandler Roundup event.

Professor Martinez serves hosts for first episode to introduce the season that will host two sets of student projects. First, students will produce podcasts examining the local historical events: The 1997 Chandler Round Up that had tremendous impact on immigrant and mixed-status families in Arizona. Secondly, students will produce podcasts around the second theme of the course: child and family psychology. Take a journey with our class! 

The "Chandler Roundup" was a planned five-day operation (July 26 - July 31, 1997) carried out by the City of Chandler. The event involved the Police Department of the City of Chandler and the Border Patrol which at the time was a division of the Immigration Naturalization Services (INS). The results were that a total of 432 Latinx undocumented immigrants were deported and repatriated. This student group focused on contextualizing the historical legacy of this event in the Arizona landscape.
