When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

In my journey toward a career I remember hearing friends and family say, “Your parents must be so proud!” Or after a major accomplishment or graduation, people would say, “You should be so proud of yourself!”

While we may certainly feel good about our accomplishments, we need to be wary of putting too much emphasis on our own efforts. When I look back on my achievements, there’s never been a time when I was completely on my own. Whether it was the financial support of a family member or the loving and prayerful support of parents and friends, everything I’ve done has been a communal effort.

The book of Proverbs reminds us that pridefulness is a dangerous road. And although it is entirely appropriate to be satisfied and grateful for our achievements, we must remember that we haven’t reached these places by ourselves.

Christ shows us the better way. Philippians 2:6-8 tells us that Christ “did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather . . . he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”

Jesus’ humility shows that even though he accomplished incredible things, he never gave the glory to himself. Whatever he achieved he did out of obedience to the Father and in service to others.

Lord Jesus, help me to humble myself rather than being prideful. By your Spirit, empower me to be like you. Amen.
