My family was part of the Great Migration, leaving the Jim Crow South in search of opportunity, safety, and dignity in Oakland for my maternal side and Berkeley and Richmond for my paternal side. For years, I’ve felt the pull to leave my hometown, but something keeps holding me here. Maybe it’s more than circumstance—maybe it’s purpose.
