Meet Natalie Candela, a Hypnotherapist from the USA. We chat about how Natalie got interested in hypnosis. Coming from an educational background, she feels that hypnosis is another method of training people, albeit a very personal one. It is interesting to me how hypnosis practitioners worldwide use the same language when talking about what they do; it seems we are all on the same page and doing the same good work, no matter where we are.

Belinda Roxburgh started life out as a student of psychology before becoming a veterinarian. Many years later she found her way back to working with the mind. She studied to become a hypnotherapist and through an exercise during one of these classes, stopped drinking wine. Today she works with World Without Wine and helps clients who want to stop drinking alcohol, as well as working with other addictions.

The powerful Subconscious mind is the seat of our emotions, beliefs and imagination. It is key to our automatic behaviours and habits. When someone pushes our buttons it means that an emotion is triggered from way back that was associated with a particular memory, real or imagined. In a second, your heart can speed up and you can be ready to argue, cry or run for it. Emotions are neurophysiological reactions that can be triggered by a thought. This mind-body connection is what we are most interested in when using hypnosis for stress-related conditions.

She says that during hypnotherapy, it is possible to change those automatic reactions to triggers as well as retrain the brain to have other healthier thoughts. When we experience this type of learning in a hypnotic state of mind it is one of the most effective ways to rewire the brain (called neuroplasticity). This means that a new automatic behaviour in reaction to a trigger becomes possible and an empowering feeling replaces the old emotion.

Heather Fountain is based in Durban and describes her journey through life as a colorful and interesting one. One's life is never a straight path and hers has taken many twists and turns, some were dark, painful and lonely and others filled with light, laughter and love. She says her journey has laid a solid foundation to really understand that each person’s journey is unique to them and should be heard without judgement or clouded by her interpretation of her life.

Throughout her life, people have been her passion, and this has manifested itself in many ways from being an HR Manager, a Training Manager, a Master Mentor and a Life Coach to many people. She worked in the corporate world for many years which has ensured that she has a solid foundation on what takes place in business.

In this interview she talks about how her interest in Hypnotherapy started in 2011 when she read a book called “Journey of the Souls”. This led her to attend a course with SAMHA on Past Life Regression. It was here that her passion for Hypnotherapy started to grow.

Heather talks about how she is seeing more and more people suffering from trauma caused by Covid-19 and how she deals with clients. She is also doing work with health care workers who are suffering because of anxiety and stress.

It being the 1st of April and all, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to interview myself, seeing as no-one else would do it!

So here I am chatting to myself about when I first encountered hypnosis and my journey towards becoming a hypnotherapist. I talk about my practice and my speciality in stop smoking hypnosis. I then talk to myself about my media experience and why I studied for a Master's degree at Wits at the age of 55.

The conversation then turns to how I am using my hypnotherapy and media experience so as to promote hypnotherapy through the articles I write and this podcast series, as well as the challenges of reopening my practice in the midst of a pandemic.

It's a fascinating interview, even if I have to say so myself!
