  • Didn't Drink Today - Steppin Out Radio
Dave didn't drink today, and because of that he says "he never had it so good." He grew up in a steel mill town, with a family of non-alcoholics. He never drank as a child. Dave's first use of alcohol came when he was away at college, where an athlete friend took him to a bar. He remembers feeling so confident, and from that point on, he drank because alcohol could "give him something." He would keep drinking through college, becoming a schoolteacher. But alcohol did the very opposite; His marriage failed and found himself in trouble with the law.

  • #1737: 30 Years of the North American Wacko
This week, we continue celebrating (and apologizing for) Car Talk's 30th Anniversary on NPR, with some of our all-time favorite "out there" calls. Our roster includes space shuttle astronaut John, whose government vehicle had a slight hesitation problem at 17,000 miles per hour; Gail, the Most Wanted Tollbooth fugitive at the Betsy Ross Bridge; Dave from Bemidji, MN, whose road trip from Alaska included using a campfire grill to fix his catalytic converter; Will, whose old dog Moses "blew beets"; and the saga of one of our heroes, lawn chair pilot Larry Walters. All this and more, this week on The Best of Car Talk's Field Guide to the North American Wacko.

  • Bangladesh Accuses Myanmar of Airspace Violations
The UN says that more than 400,000 Rohingya Muslims have now fled to Bangladesh since violence erupted in Myanmar's Rakhine state three weeks ago.
Also in the programme: British police say they've made a significant arrest following Friday's attempted London underground bombing; and North Korea says its goal is to achieve "military equilibrium" with the United States.

  • Brené Brown: Braving The Wilderness
In this age of increased polarization, maybe our ideas about belonging need to be reexamined. Social scientist and storyteller Brené Brown argues in her new book "Braving The Wilderness" that "we can find sacredness both in being a part of something and in standing alone when necessary." Brown, whose TED talk on the power of vulnerability has been viewed more than 30 million times, joins Joshua to explain why "believing in and belonging to ourselves is the only way back to each other."
