Così come duplice è la natura delle forze che spingono il percorso di Planck, tra amore per la vecchia fisica e apertura al progresso, così non poteva che essere duplice questa puntata. Planck si trova a dover affrontare il problema del corpo nero, che deve coniugare termodinamica ed elettromagnetismo; e per risolverlo deve cedere alla concezione atomica di Boltzmann, pur rimanendo restio a riconoscere che quegli oscillatori risonanti che generano lo spettro del corpo nero sono proprio i tanto vituperati atomi.
Planck non lo sa, ma questo è l’inizio della fine: la fisica classica, sotto la spinta di innovatori riluttanti come lui e più entusiasti come Einstein, sta per cedere sotto l’impeto della rivoluzione quantistica. Sempre più scienziati si rendono conto che il quanto elementare d’azione – la nuova entità da lui introdotta per giustificare lo spettro del corpo nero – ha delle applicazioni che possono rendere conto e unificare tanti fenomeni per i quali si arrancava a trovare una spiegazione: l’effetto fotoelettrico, la struttura atomica, la fisica del mondo microscopico.
Questi successi, che consolideranno l’immagine di Planck come autorità scientifica e figura di riferimento (non solo accademica, ma umana) e che saranno premiati con il Nobel per la fisica nel 1918, saranno presto contornati da ombre ed eventi funesti. Planck, uomo di Stato, allo Stato fedele, non concepisce una reazione al nascente Reich e all’antisemitismo che piaga il mondo scientifico della Germania tra le due guerre, se non in termini di temporeggiamenti e compromessi. In questo modo finisce sia per irritare il Reich, da cui cerca di mantenere l’indipendenza finché può all’interno del suo Istituto Kaiser-Wilhelm, sia per entrare in contrasto con gli ebrei allontanati dai loro posti di lavoro e poi costretti a fuggire dal Paese.
La disgrazia di Planck culminò nella perdita dell’ultimo figlio rimasto in vita, giustiziato per aver attentato alla vita di Hitler, e nella distruzione della sua residenza durante i bombardamenti di Berlino. Ma rispetto ad altri, che vuoi per convinzione, vuoi per opportunismo aderirono alla filosofia del Terzo Reich diventandone esponenti a tutti gli effetti, Planck mantenne comunque una sua integrità, che nei brevi anni tra la guerra e la morte gli valse l’intitolazione dell’ex Kaiser-Wilhelm, ora chiamato Max Planck Institute.
Nel corso della puntata discutiamo anche dell’evoluzione delle unità di misura, definite a partire dalla realtà umana, frammentate in Italia durante la parcellizzazione del territorio nazionale conseguente alla caduta dell’Impero Romano, riunite da Napoleone; e di come si sia proceduto a negli ultimi tempi a un’unificazione svincolata da fenomeni antropomorfi o legata a fenomeni terrestri, basata sulle costanti universali della fisica. Proprio come avrebbe voluto Planck.

Se dovessimo trovare una metafora per il Nobel che vi racconteremo in questa puntata, sceglieremmo quella dello strappo. Lo strappo tra la rassicurante fisica classica deterministica e le terrificanti rivoluzioni che hanno avuto luogo agli inizi del Novecento; lo strappo con la visione ottocentesca del mondo che avvenne proprio nel 1900, in quel fatidico anno a cavallo tra i due secoli; lo strappo tra sostenitori della visione particellare e antiatomisti, tra filosofi e teorici della fisica e coloro che consideravano soltanto le manifestazioni fenomenologiche come unica vera realtà del mondo.

Non tutti i supereroi indossano una divisa, ma alcuni indossano indumenti molto coprenti: sono coloro che cercano di raggiungere temperature sempre più basse per scoprire proprietà della materia che in condizioni normali non vedremmo. Tra i pionieri della corsa al freddo va attribuita una menzione d’onore a Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, fisico olandese che per primo, nel 1908, riuscì a ottenere l’elio liquido, concludendo una gara che era cominciata un secolo prima e aveva reclamato la salute di molti. Per aver raggiunto questo obiettivo, e in generale per il suo lavoro sulla fisica del freddo, Onnes fu premiato col Nobel per la fisica nel 1913.

Questa è la storia stra-ordinaria di una donna che con niente in mano se non la sua voglia di imparare, scoprire, mettersi in gioco, ha raggiunto la vetta della Conoscenza, riconosciuta da tutti non una ma ben due volte. È l’esempio di dedizione totale alla materia di sua competenza. È la storia di Marie Curie.
Quando Maria Skłodowska prese quattro vestiti e un materasso e partì alla volta di Parigi, probabilmente non immaginava neanche lontanamente che nel giro di poco più di dieci anni avrebbe ottenuto il suo primo premio Nobel; sicuramente non immaginava di potersi innamorare di un gentil signore di nome Pierre, con il quale condividerà lavoro e sentimenti. Non immaginava che un giorno, a distanza di oltre ottant’anni, ci saremmo appassionati ancora alla sua storia.
Marie Curie è stata pioniera nel campo della radioattività. A dir la verità è stata pioniera in molte cose: prima donna a vincere un premio Nobel (fisica) nel 1903, prima donna a insegnare alla Sorbona, prima scienziata in assoluto a vincere un secondo primo Nobel (chimica) nel 1911 e infine prima donna a essere tumulata al Pantheon di Parigi per meriti propri.
La storia scientifica di Madame Curie è nota ai più, quella che il più delle volte passa in sordina è la sua storia personale, indissolubilmente legata alla prima ma lasciata da parte quasi fosse poco importante. E invece sapere che per studiare il più tempo possibile Marie era capace di non mangiare per giorni, che per risparmiare qualche franco rinunciava a comprarsi il carbone per scaldarsi durante i freddi inverni parigini e che pur di seguire i suoi ideali e sogni si è ritrovata suo malgrado criticata da tanti, è importante per capire perché Marie Curie ha lasciato il segno nella Storia.

Quando Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, con la coda dell’occhio, vide un tenue bagliore verde svilupparsi dove non se lo aspettava, Alfred Nobel era ancora in vita e la fisica classica ottocentesca sembrava ancora reggersi in piedi. Eppure quel fenomeno, non solo mai riconosciuto da altri ma nemmeno mai previsto prima di allora, stava per scatenare una serie di esperimenti e riflessioni che avrebbero contribuito alla grande rivoluzione scientifica del Novecento, e che si sarebbero rivelate fondamentali per l’assegnazione di almeno una mezza dozzina di premi Nobel successivi.
Röntgen per primo descrisse una nuova specie di raggi invisibili, che noi avremmo conosciuto come raggi X; dalla sua scoperta derivarono gli esperimenti che portarono alla rivelazione della radioattività naturale, e quelli che avrebbero decretato la natura dei raggi X come parte dello spettro di onde elettromagnetiche.
Il percorso con cui Röntgen giunse alla scoperta che lo avrebbe reso famoso, così come il suo rapporto con le ricadute (scientifiche e non) dei raggi X sono fatti, possiamo proprio dirlo, di luci e ombre. Il carattere di sperimentatore puro tipico di Röntgen gli permise di indagare a fondo il fenomeno, fino a capire senza ombra di dubbio di avere a che fare con qualcosa di nuovo e sbalorditivo, che altri prima di lui avevano avuto l’occasione di vedere, ma non ne erano stati capaci; allo stesso modo gli impedì non solo di prevederne gli sviluppi e le implicazioni concettuali, ma perfino di accettarle.
I raggi X ebbero un impatto immediato e profondo sulla medicina del Novecento, specialmente in ambito diagnostico e chirurgico, salvando un numero incalcolabile di vite e procurando così un innegabile beneficio all’umanità, così come auspicato da Alfred Nobel; tuttavia presto si venne a scoprire che così come potevano salvare vite, potevano anche accorciarle, causando un danno silenzioso e crescente nei tessuti dei corpi viventi.
Nella cultura di massa i raggi di Röntgen, con la loro capacità di penetrare la carne e mostrare lo scheletro, divennero la controparte oscura e della fotografia e del cinema, che proprio in quegli anni si stavano guadagnando visibilità nella cultura di massa. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, premiato col Nobel nell’anno uno del Novecento, non fu il primo fisico del ventesimo secolo, bensì l’ultimo dell’Ottocento, e fra tutti i dinamitardi fu forse il più riluttante.
Tocca a due fisici, Marcello Barisonzi e Silvia Kuna Ballero, narrare vita e opere del primo premio Nobel per la fisica, dalla gioventù di studente non proprio brillantissimo alla prima storica radiografia di una mano con anello, fino a giungere a una celebrità che gli rimarrà sempre più scomoda.

Inauguriamo Dinamitardi!, la serie sui premi Nobel dell’inizio del XX secolo, con un volo introduttivo su storia, luci e ombre del premio Nobel, presentato da Massimo Sandal, divulgatore scientifico, e Marcello Barisonzi, fisico. Quando Alfred Nobel muore, il 10 dicembre 1896 a San Remo, ben pochi si aspettavano che lasciasse le sue enormi fortune a favore di un premio per chi conferisse il “maggior beneficio all’umanità”. Nobel, ricchissimo imprenditore nel settore delle armi e inventore di esplosivi, tra cui la celebre dinamite, voleva riscattare la sua reputazione di “mercante di morte” - o almeno così dice la leggenda. Ma forse Nobel non si aspettava di aver dato vita, con il suo testamento, all’onorificenza più alta dell’umanità. I Nobel dovevano essere un semplice incentivo al benessere dell’umanità. Ogni anno da ormai da più di un secolo, invece, il Nobel scandisce il ritmo delle scienze, concedendo il più ambito dei premi a un massimo di tre ricercatori per disciplina. Sono diventati un’unità di misura del prestigio delle accademie e delle nazioni, oggetto di compravendite, scambi e favoritismi dietro le quinte. Protetti da un meccanismo di selezione segreto e impenetrabile, che rilascia i propri archivi solo dopo cinquant’anni.
Oggi però la medaglia del Nobel splende meno brillante. Sono parecchie le contraddizioni di un premio ormai invecchiato rispetto allo sviluppo della scienza e società contemporanea. Il Nobel premia la scienza, eppure è una cerimonia che ha tutta la liturgia di una consacrazione religiosa. Premia l’impresa intellettuale più democratica, sociale e collettiva dell’umanità, ma lo fa scegliendo arbitrariamente un massimo di tre individui per disciplina. Crea un’immagine gerarchica della ricerca scientifica, guidata di una élite di inarrivabili geni su cui si posano i riflettori, ma aggancia volti e persone alle opache discipline scientifiche, volti e persone a cui tutti possiamo fare riferimento. Queste contraddizioni sono sì un problema per l’immagine della scienza. Ma sono anche il sale del Nobel, che ci inducono a parlarne e discuterne ogni anno senza annoiarci.

ZANG TUMB TUMB con queste parole esplosive, militaresche, composte durante la Battaglia di Adrianopoli, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti metteva simbolicamente fine alla Belle Epoque.
La Belle Epoque, quel periodo della storia moderna che va dal 1871 al 1914, viene solitamente considerata come un’epoca d’oro, un tempo di pace e prosperità, l’apice della civiltà europea prima della catastrofe della Grande Guerra. Come tutti i ricordi velati di nostalgia, quest’idea della Belle Epoque è illusoria: la pace tra le nazioni era venata da continue tensioni e dispute internazionali; i due paesi “ultimi arrivati” sulla scena europea, Italia e Germania, sgomitavano per prendere il posto al tavolo delle potenze imperiali già stabilite, Inghilterra, Francia e Russia; i capi di stato maggiore si impegnavano alla corsa verso nuovi e più devastanti armamenti, frutto delle nuove scoperte scientifiche. Protagonista di questa corsa fu una famiglia di industriali svedesi, di cui sentiremo molto parlare in seguito...
Se nelle alte sfera della politica regnava la tensione, il popolo non stava a guardare: il socialismo e l’anarchia promettevano alla nuova classe sociale dei proletari urbani un futuro radioso di fratellanza e prosperità per tutti. Un futuro che però poteva arrivare solo attraverso la presa violenta del potere; giovani uomini senza nessuna speranza decisero di immolarsi per l’Idea Anarchica; decine di attentati terroristici per colpire importanti figure di stato, che spesso coinvolsero innocenti passanti. Agli attentati seguì una repressione poliziesca dura, spietata ma anche ampiamente sproporzionata.
In questo clima non propriamente idilliaco, anche il mondo della scienza era in crisi: le nuove scoperte del XIX secolo avevano spinto la scienza classica, deterministica, ai suoi limiti concettuali. Fenomeni come l’esistenza di sostanze radioattive, e di nuove forme di energia ad esse collegate, non potevano essere spiegati con le teorie scientifiche classiche. Occorreva modificare radicalmente la "vecchia visione" per poter illustrare il mondo presente.
Questo podcast, intitolato “i dinamitardi”, vuole rendere omaggio a 10 scienziati della generazione della Belle Epoque, 10 Premi Nobel che fecero “brillare” la scienza del tempo, spianarono montagne concettuali ritenute invalicabili, ed aprirono un varco verso la scienza contemporanea.
