How could a 51-minute podcast episode do justice to a 3 hour and 47 minute long historical epic? It can't! But God knows that doesn't stop Jim from rambling his way through perhaps the mosts epic film in history, which happens to be a humongously budgeted character-driven film that would NEVER get made today. There's some big balls on this motion picture.

There's a lot of movies Jim still hasn't seen, but The Bridge on the River Kwai may now be in his Top 10. One of the more beautifully shot character-driven films you'll ever see, The Bridge on the River Kwai deserves its title as a classic. It's an engaging, poignant film that features stunning visuals, memorable performances and questions about the symbols we create to bring meaning to our lives. Who'd have thunk that the winner of 7 Oscars would be head and shoulders better than introspective 20-somethings babbling cluelessly on about the world?

After all that low budget, introspective nonsense, how about some sweeping historical epics to cleanse the palette? Andy Beach (figuratively) stops by I Do Movies Badly to discuss the late British filmmaker whose films could in no way ever be described as terse. Andy and Jim discuss what makes up Lean's style, why it's unfair and inaccurate to describe Lean as either conventional or Hollywood and how, were he alive today, he would fit alongside David Simon in the world of HBO television. Even the superficial knowledge Jim holds of Lean was enough to render the recommendations unsurprising: Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Doctor Zhivago (1965).

It's too little too late for Four Eyed Monsters, the film that showed that there's at least one good pickle in the Mumblecore jar. An interesting aesthetic and thematic pastiche, Four Eyed Monsters is an honest and forward-thinking look at the eccentricities and complications of online dating in an urban setting a decade before that sort of thing was prolific. Too bad it still exhibits the standard self-important navel-gazing tendencies of its Mumblecore compatriots.

After the travesty of Dance Party, USA, Revolution Summer is a step in the right direction. Too bad Mumblecore needs about a million more steps in the right direction before Jim begins to care. Revolution Summer has some interesting ideas, but is too hampered by its low budget production to realize its potential. Hey, here's an idea - in a movie set against the backdrop of domestic terrorism, maybe show some actual terrorism?

This week, Jim is joined by nobody to discuss Mumblecore because Jim is an idiot who can't figure out technology! Sadly, the episode with the slated guest host, Jape Man, was lost in the ether, so Jim does his best to try to recap the conversation from memory. The finer points include (he thinks), how Mumblecore gets a bad rap due more to its fans than its output, how not all that wanders is lost (narratively) and how being an aimless, confused 20-something is a concept to which even Pakistanis can relate. One thing Jim definitely remembers is the recommendations: Aaron Katz's Dance Party, USA (2006), Miles Montalbano's Revolution Summer (2007), and Susan Buice & Arin Crumley's Four Eyed Monsters (2005).
