Have you ever had occasion to question the merit of something you’ve poured yourself into? I think it’s a fairly common experience. Most of us, if we’re evolving people, can look back on our past and see things there that wouldn’t be a good fit for “present tense me”. In the context of exploring what we believe many of us probably have a generous archive to draw on. In some ways, that broadly frames what we’ll be exploring this Sunday. Now…that could sound like we should brace ourselves for an encounter with regret. That’s up to you, but it’s not the perspective I’ll be coming from. Remember that as we move through stages of doubt and changing beliefs, we are not just leaving what we believed before. We are standing on it to reach for what is next, drawing on it to inform our doubts and questions, and referencing it as we consider the options. If you’ve been following along in the series, the images of rings of a tree or boxes without lids might be helpful. In any case, we’ll be moving from consideration of Stage One structures into the examination of Stage 2. It’s not a rocket ride (can the world afford more rocket rides?), but it is movement.
