He then  joined the U.S. Department of State where he and his wife served in Bosnia, Estonia, China, Rwanda, and Poland.

We gain some fascinating insight into the life of someone who has helped keep the peace in refugee camps, seen the aftermath of the Rwanda genocide and was in Berlin when the Berlin Wall came down.
