We need to talk about J.K. Rowling and what the heck to do now after a lifetime of loving Harry Potter! In this very special episode of I Met You On LJ, Maggie and V interview someone right in the thick of things: FictionAlley creator, OTW volunteer, and intellectual property attorney Heidi Tandy, also known as Heidi8. Tandy has worked on behalf of fandom in fair use and copyright cases for the last two decades, and talks with V and Maggie about early Harry Potter fan conventions, the dark ages of FanFiction.net, and what to do now that J.K. Rowling has revealed herself to be as dark and twisted as a horcrux.
tw self-harm // PATREON BONUS PREVIEW! On the 10th of every month, Maggie is going to enthrall Patreon donors with a few chapters of the irrepressible, incomprehensible, enigmatic literary tastemaker that is... My Immortal. We offer you this preview of the first installment of her solo Patreon show on the main feed as an enticement to pop over to our Patreon at patreon.com/imetyouonljpodcast and see what other goodies you can get. HI DONORS, WE SAID FLIRTILY.
Grab your ice-cream maker and run! This week, Maggie and V discuss their current fandoms, The Punisher and Star Wars, and draw comparisons between their favorite handsome emotional fighter characters who really need therapy, loving things with massive sophomore slumps, and entering massive boys' club universes through new canon.
It's sort of an A/B/O episode! Maggie gets down and dirty with Teen Wolf, Sterek, emotional growth for action heroes, and the whole age difference of it all. V gives us a run-down of dreamboat-who-needs-a-dom George Shelley and his boy band Union J, as well as an attempt to make the kpop model happen in the UK: Stereo Kicks. (Spoiler alert: It didn't work.)
In a significantly heavier episode, V and Maggie take on The Hunger Games and the HBO series Looking through the lens of socioeconomic and racial diversity. They'll discuss the incredible experiences and travels that came about because of these fandoms, some of the fanworks they each created, and how The Hunger Games might have looked if it had come out in 2020. Additionally, Maggie gushes over The Man So Beautiful She Started Crying, Raúl Castillo.
This week, Maggie and V are each covering one ridonkulous, fun, infuriating fandom of their past: Glee and One Direction. They'll discuss what they loved and why they couldn't not join in... as well as the similar, somewhat icky experiences they had due to writing early RPF for Chris Colfer/Darren Criss and Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson. This episode is simply about when tinhatting ruins everything.
It's a ten-year retrospective! Follow Maggie and V's introductions to fandom, from their childhoods through 2008 or so, and you'll see why it's a miracle that they're friends at all. After falling hard for River Phoenix, Maggie does a deep-dive on guitarist John Frusciante and the Red Hot Chili Peppers; V takes us on a rollercoaster journey with the members of bubblegum boy band Dream Street.
It's the pilot episode of I MET YOU ON LJ! Join your hosts, Maggie and V, as they revisit the outrageously popular and very pretentious fandom space they became friends in (and helped moderate!) twelve years ago—it's Rob Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and the Brit Pack. They'll reminisce about locked LiveJournal communities, spectacular photoshoots, folk musicians, and so much RPF.
And okay, they talk about Twilight.
I Met You On LJ is a brand new podcast about fandom and friendship. Listen to clips from upcoming episodes and a summary preview! Our first full episode releases September 1, 2020.
