Social media is a phenomenon of modern society that both fascinates and terrifies me with its ability to simultaneously delight and disgust. What I find most intriguing is how its promise of connection often translates into isolation, kind of like how the Internet’s promise of limitless access to information has given rise to increasingly wide spread and destructive conspiracy theories.
This week we’re going to explore the difficulty finding and maintaining a sense of human community in the age of social media with a little help from Mavis Staples, Father John Misty, Ta-Nehisi Coates, C.S. Lewis and Terrence Malick. If you don’t recognize all of those names, don’t sweat it; think of this as a chance to discover something new.
A quick reminder that Kid’s Table is on hiatus for the summer, but there remains Lego, toys and a whole lot of books.
We’re meeting at Sam’s Place where the coffee will be on and the (real-life) conversations are waiting.
