I probably shouldn’t be telling you this…
For the record: whatever you say to an employee you lead about another employee you lead after saying those seven words is a truly bad idea.
In fact, if you ever hear those words coming out of your mouth about any topic at all, just stop talking.
The problem for many leaders is that they NEED to verbally process a challenge they are experiencing with someone on their team, but they don’t have access to someone with whom it is safe (and appropriate) to do so.This is why leaders need coaches.
It’s okay to need to talk through it. To verbalize your thoughts and organize your thinking with a trusted partner who will challenge your perspective and offer wise counsel.
It’s not okay to enlist someone you lead to listen to your frustrations just because you trust them.
Think of it like this: It’s okay to talk to your doctor about that rash that just won’t clear up and ask for advice about how to deal with it, but it’s not okay to have the same conversation with someone you lead.
Coaches are there to help you navigate the obstacles and opportunities you can’t address with just anyone. They are there to help you find alternative perspectives and offer unbiased feedback.
They are there to care about you and your success, and give you the encouragement and straight talk you need to make the best choices possible for you, your people, and your organization.
A coach offers an appropriate outlet for the frustrations you need to sort out so you can protect the people you lead, instead of dragging them into the muck and mire.
You don’t have to carry the load of leadership alone, but you can’t place that burden on the people you lead.
OPPORTUNITY FOR ACTION: Consider what you share with the people you lead and ask yourself if any of it might border on being out of bounds. How would those conversations feel different with an unbiased and trusted partner? If I could help you clarify any aspect of your work right now, what would it be?
