  • Remembrance
In every life, there are pivotal moments that help define a person, a country, a world. This week, the US and the world commemorated the 25th anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001.
I was only a mile and a half away from the World Trade Center, up Fifth Ave. I could see much of it straight down the Ave — and worse, could hear the entire city scream when the towers came down. That sound will remain in my bones until I breathe no more.
Today, in my small way, I honor the people whose lives were lost during the event, the first responders who waded in to a nightmare, and all the people whose health was made more fragile by the air in those first weeks. I don’t have it in me to play live today, but have instead assembled a program from the RadioSpiral library.
    Loneward: “Mellow Solace” (Pallid Memories)
Mirada: “Truth in the Face of Adversity” (Unfolding Memories)
Jack Hertz: “Memories of Silence” (Mechanics of Blue)
Joe Frawley: “Sketches from Memory” (The Silent Ballet Volume 9)
Lucette Bourdin and Phillip Wilkerson: “Part Memory, Part Distance” (Coast to Coast)
Gregg Plummer: “Remember This Place” (Remember This Place)
ontol: “What the Sky Remembered” (What the Sky Remembered)
James Shain: “Flashes [Ever Remember]” (Windowless Journey)
Altus: “Fade Though You Remember” (City of Ashes)
Thom Brennan: “A Place to Remember” (Vista)

Robert Dorschel: “If she’s my siren, then let me drown” (Out of Character)

  • The Four Seasonings
Food is sustenance, and so much more. It provides comfort, warmth, perhaps memories of home. Today let’s play with our food! In the second hour, the live set — somewhat abbreviated — is called Telicherry Heat. An homage to Lucette Bourdin’s “Pondicherry Heat”, this set celebrates the humble black peppercorn.

  • Living Memory
I Scream Sunday is back today with a program about history and memory.
Skroink is getting involved in a beautiful and difficult oral history project in the American South. Without getting into details (because I can’t), it’s going to be fraught to say the least. The conversations so far have been great, and open, and vulnerable, and I’m honored to be part of this amazing project. So today I’m exploring memory and history — the good and the bad, the ugly and the beautiful. As children, we remember things a child’s way; elders may remember very differently.
4T Thieves: “Past Inside the Present” (Hauntology)
Jack Hertz: “History, a Computer Stored in Tomorrow” (The Last Songs of a Dying Tribe)
Altus: “Absolve the Past” (The Time Collection Disc 1: Ghost of Time)
And the Forest Will Breathe: “Remembering The History That Wasn’t Taught” (And the Forest Will Breathe)
Arcanum: “Echoes of the Past” (Man In the Mirror)
Max Corbacho: “Magenta Beauty” (The Resonant Memory of Earth)
Scott Lawlor: “The Pain of Memory” (BadSeed)
Numina: “Memory of Leaves, of Bells” (Solace)
The live set in the second hour is called In Living Memory.

  • Hands of the Mothers
Today is Mother’s Day in the United States. Our relationships with our mothers can be complex, or beautiful, or comforting, or even nonexistent. But one fact remains: we are only here because of them. We often take that for granted. A mother’s hands are always busy; they do so much. They provide comfort, they create things, they cook, they pray, they demonstrate affection, sometimes discipline… or harsher actions. And for those who think of the earth as Mother, her hands are everywhere, in every creature, every plant, every breath of air. Let’s hold hands with the Mothers today.
Questions in Dialect: “On this Hand” (The Ghost Wishes to Speak 2007)
Der Spyra: “Three Hands (Sequencer Sketch)” (Elevator To Heaven Pt. I)
Phobium: “Take My Hand” (The Time Is Now)
Infinity Sideways: “The Quiet Universe III: Her Hand Upon the Helm” (Astronauts 8)
Petal: “There is a Gentle Hand” (Up From Here)
Anantakara: “In Whose Hands is the Always” (Newt [At Whose Feet is Eternity])
onewayness + dRachEmUsiK: “A Handful of Dust” (A Handful of Dust – Live Improvisations Vol. 2)
Fabio Keiner: “I am a child of mother earth” (lilith’s song)
    Sheleah Nahshon: “Mother Nature” (SANCTUARY)
In the second hour, the live set is called These Old Hands. And it is for that reason that ʞu¡0ɹʞS will be taking a hiatus again for a few weeks.

  • Snow Tides
This long overdue episode highlights the music of Norwegian composer Erik Wøllo, whose album Snow Tides was released in early March of this year.
He has been composing and performing since 1980, and his musical range is wide indeed -- from rock and jazz to experimental electronic and classical music. His works have been used in film, theatre, ballet, and art exhibitions.
Although he has composed for strings, woodwinds, and larger orchestras, his primary instrument is guitar, and he uses it in extraordinarily imaginative and expressive ways. Today we will hear a sampling from his new album as well as some previous releases.
    Snow Tides
    Luminara
    Snow Tides
    Glacial Veil
    Astral Travelers
    Arctic Moon
    Falling Show, Whispering Tides
    Solastalgia
    Prayer for Rain
    Recurrence
    Stargazers

    North Star
    Earth Luminous
    Light and Ground
I'll play live in the second hour (but not for the whole hour this time). The live set will be called Glacier Collapse. A glacier in Antarctica has been recorded retreating at the fastest rate in modern history. Our earth is changing before our eyes.

  • The Overview Effect
It takes an extraordinary team of people, with technology that defies imagination, along with exceptional courage, to send humans into space. Each time we do, we contribute to something greater than our individual selves. The successful Artemis II journey reminds us that together we are capable of great achievements when we focus on collaborating, working toward a common goal. Today we celebrate space travel.

brokenkites: “Waystations in Space” (A Desaturated Version of Tomorrow)

    SPACECRAFT: “Explorations In Space” (Hummel)
Brannan Lane: “Ambient Space Dreams” (Ambient Singles, Vol. 1)

In the second hour, the live set is called Greater Than Ourselves, and is a tribute to all the people who imagined and brought to life the Artemis II mission.

“Love You to the Moon and Back”

  • A Wind In the Door
Wind finding its way through and under doors, window, and other gaps, can be incredibly eerie. This episode explores the wind.
    ʞu¡0ɹʞS: “Ghosts” (Over. Tone.)
This track was crafted from the sound of high wind through heavy steel doors in a studio that ʞu¡0ɹʞS had in Los Angeles years ago. The sound was so bizarre! You hear us exclaiming at the beginning of the track (we were in a recording session at the time), and we decided we had to let the wind do its thing before we could resume. I then processed the sound using Paulstretch and other effects, layered my voice over the track, and this is the result.
Lily Pond Orchestra: “Weaving the Wind” (Olde Ghosts)
    Wavestar: “Voyager” (Moonwind)
    DeepWarmth: “Winds” (Nature 3)
    Headzic: “Wind Rider” (Flow)
The live set in the second hour is called The Wind Breathes a Ghost.

  • Hope and Fear
Fear and hope often live together in an uneasy collaboration. Today we explore both emotions, and the boundaries between the two.

Gypsy Witch: “Hopes, Fears and Longing” (Unspoken)
