It’s Women in Horror Month! So, for this episode we decided to put the spotlight on the French film director Julia Ducournau. We are discussing her debut feature film Raw (2016) and her most recent release Titane (2021), which made her the second female director to ever win a Palme d’Or award. We will also be briefly discussing her short film from 2011, Junior. The themes that we will be dissecting will be body horror from the female gaze, the monstrous feminine, as well as sexuality and gender as represented in Julia’s films.

In this episode, we will discuss how Season of the Witch is representative of the dual nature within women seen in the archetypes of The Witch versus The Wife. We will explore the role of the wife in western culture and the societal expectations placed upon women in the 1970s. Also popular during this time was the rise of occultism and witchcraft among these (primarily) white women due to the independence it created. As well, we will examine the image of the witch as representative of feminism and sexual freedom that could be seen taking place during the Sexual Revolution (1960-1980) in which Season of the Witch takes place. As we watch Joan move from the role of a desperate, constrained housewife/mother to a sexually liberated witch, Season of the Witch suggests that she potentially traded one gilded cage for another.

How does Romero’s perspective about these roles compare to that of two alternative women living their unconventional lives in 2021? This is what we intend to find out in probing the more obscure and underrated 1973 film. Enjoy and welcome to our dark side...

Historically, female vampires were portrayed as predatory lesbians or as subservient to a Master in the form of Dracula. They were the Brides, a means to bring victims to the male vampire. Modernized versions of the Brides have them liberated from any Master and are unconventional women fighting against the patriarchy and the “traditions” that try to keep them submissive. Female vampires of the 2010s show us the full spectrum of these women - they are taking back the night. Through the films Bit (2019), Byzantium (2017), and Bliss (2019) – We see the Rise of Carmilla. In this episode, it was Spinster’s Choice and Kelly chose the theme of Children’s Horror and the film up for discussion is the 1985 Disney film Return to Oz. This is a childhood favourite of Kelly’s and has left her lasting nightmarish memories and this is a first-time watch for me despite my love for the Wizard of Oz. So we are going to discuss L. Frank Baum and the World of Oz, the film as gateway horror and the age-old question: When is it a good time to introduce children to the horror genre?
