Jo Salas is a writer, a social activist, and devoted grandmother. She grew up in New Zealand and now lives two hours north of New York City near woods and mountains. Jo’s fiction includes the novels Dancing with Diana (Codhill Press, 2015), and Mrs. Lowe-Porter (JackLeg Press, 2024). Her short stories have appeared in literary journals and anthologies. Her story “After,” in the anthology Facing the Change: Personal Encounters with Global Warming was nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Other short stories have won or been shortlisted for awards.
Jo is also the cofounder of Playback Theatre, an original form of interactive theatre based on personal stories now practiced worldwide. Her nonfiction writing has chronicled and explored Playback Theatre since its inception, with many publications including Improvising Real Life: Personal Story in Playback Theatre, now published in ten translations and a 20th anniversary edition.
Today, we spend much of our time discussing MRS. LOWE-PORTER which is based on the life of Helen Lowe-Porter, a brilliant, ambitious, warm-hearted, and self-deprecating woman who struggles for her own literary voice against the conventions of her time and the demands of the two male luminaries in her life: the legendary novelist Thomas Mann, whose works she translates, and her charismatic husband Elias.
It's "[a]n exploration of the complicated life of the translator of Thomas Mann – who is a writer in her own right. Salas asks difficult questions about work and gender – whose words should take precedence? Whose work? Whose needs? Salas uses the real life of Helen Tracy Lowe-Porter as the foundation for this fascinating novel.”

Jo shares about what led her to write the book, her own resonance with Helen's story, what women contend with professionally and creatively when the world is not necessarily asking for their output, and then also another of Jo's major contributions to the world in her 50 year effort to develop and share Playback Theatre. Today on the show I get to chat with Amber Rubarth! Amber left home at 17 years old to become a chainsaw sculptor in Nevada. At 21, she quit and decided to begin writing songs and teaching herself guitar. One of her early originals was awarded Grand Prize in NPR's Mountain Stage New Song contest. She has performed hundreds of stages around the world, from the early days opening for a flea circus at a Texas theme park, to performing an original duet with Jason Mraz at Carnegie Hall, to full orchestral arrangements of her songs with the Ithaca Chamber Orchestra woven into classical works. She moves fluidly between genres, creating a unique palette of instrumentation for what best serves the song.
After many years of solo touring, Amber lights up these days with collaborations in both film and music. She has written original songs and score for numerous films including Sundance festival winner 'Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work' and the super-marathon documentary 'Desert Runners.’ She co-founded 'The Paper Raincoat,’ a Brooklyn-based iTunes Indie Artist Spotlight band featured in Disney’s 'The Last Song,' the CW's 'One Tree Hill,’ and Paste Magazine who said “We think the world might be a little better if everyone heard this record.” In 2016 she recorded a live-to-tape single microphone album with her folk trio 'Applewood Road' which the London Sunday Times gave 5 stars, calling it "a flawless set that has to be the most haunting release of the past year” which led to performances at Glastonbury Music Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, a UK tour supporting Mary Chapin Carpenter, and her original arrangement and performance featured in the 'BBC Sisters in Country' documentary with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.
Her most recent album, Cover Crop, is 15 reinterpreted songs exploring the disconnection and remembrance of our interconnectivity with nature. Self-produced and performed by Amber Rubarth in the woods of the Hudson Valley, New York.
Today Amber shares with us how she went from chainsaw sculpture to musician, what's different about her musical work then and now, how she takes care of herself (with her Matcha ritual), why and how she made the Cover Crop album, and plays a few songs for us too!

NeeNee Rushie grew up in Jamaica where her mom and her 3 sisters raised her. She’s always been very touched by music and songs from a very early age. She sang in church and school choirs since the 4th grade- when she discovered that she had a talent for singing and performing.
NeeNee moved to NY in 2003 and went to college in New Paltz in 2005 where she met the original drummer and Rob (their current bass and musical director) that same year. The band would form in a couple of years. Since then, they have released 5 full length studio albums, a couple live EPs, performed all over the country and experienced countless strange and unforgettable moments. The band has had some line up changes over the years. Some wonderful musicians have come and gone. Rob, Chas and NeeNee are original members. Guthrie, Manuel, Roger and Ryan have been on board for several years now. The band operates like a family. They play reggae-ish, ska-ish, world-ish grooves, sprinkled with some soul-ish nuggets.
When NeeNee became a mother, their strategy changed from playing tons of shows, to being more picky about the shows they play. She realized that she was going to have to make the same or stronger impact, but by playing less shows. NeeNee’s daughter really regenerated a new love for the band in her. Her daughter has taken a major interest in the band and their music, and that has given NeeNee a new perspective. She’s never felt more passionate about the band and is feeling prouder of what they have done, and more confident about what they are working on.

Molly @evolutionary.holistic.healing is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of Evolutionary Psychotherapy & Holistic Healing, a healing center that opened its doors in 2021 in uptown Kingston, NY, and provides holistic mental health, recovery, and wellness services.
For the past 25 years, Molly has dedicated herself to guiding others on their transformative journeys to heal. Her educational background includes a Master’s degree in social work from NYU, a license in Clinical Social Work, and a CASAC (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor). She has studied AFT (Aroma Freedom Technique), DONA (Doulas of North America), Journey Dance, and MotherWoman. She has extensively trained in trauma treatment, Attachment Focused EMDR, completed courses in Violet Alchemy and Tony Robbins’ Mastery University, and achieved a 200-hour Hatha yoga teacher training and certification.
Beyond her therapeutic expertise, Molly is a musician, dancer, and artist, performing since 2009, and recognizing the power of creativity as both an outlet for expression and a catalyst for healing.
Jenny Wonderling @jennywonderling brings her deep love of the planet and respect for ancestral wisdom to her writing, event production, Breathwork classes, space holding, and community building spaces in the Hudson Valley. She strongly believes in the transformational powers of inter-woven creativity and how we can help bring each other’s audacious dreams and unique gifts to fruition. She co-directed, co-wrote, and co-produced BLOOM and LUMINOUS and Co-Founded Circle Creative Collective. She’s also a proud mama of 3 sons. Mary Evelyn Pritchard is an artist and community weaver whose work focuses on creating sacred spaces and experiences. In her business practice The Holographic Home, she works as a Feng Shui practitioner, interior designer and land worker. In addition, she has been actively exploring the realms of feminine embodiment and eros through study and personal practice for the last 8 years, and more recently, has begun sharing opportunities to explore these topics with others. She has a particular passion for facilitating community ritual as a pathway to individual and collective healing.
Today our conversation plays with notions of the feminine and what it means to embody all aspects of this divine energy. Mary Evelyn shares personally her journey into feminine embodiment when she was initiated by an ectopic pregnancy leading to a major surgery. Her recovery and reclaiming has seeded her with a deep wisdom and a passion for exploring and sharing the gifts of freedom that unfold from an embodiment of the feminine. She sees community ritual as being potent medicine for women who are healing and recovering their connection with the "dark feminine." We learn about her evolution into the work she now offers in the spaces we reside and how this too is an offering of daily ritual into the places we call home.
She's hosting a retreat in her sacred home space for feminine embodiment with her mentor and collaborator Whitney Ullom, Tending the Well, July 19-21. She has a few spaces open so if you are interested, be in touch soon!
