In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about a transaction at The Home Depot. Who knew they sold white canes there? They don't. I also talk about editing the latest episode of White Canes Connect. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/135
What Doesn't The Home Depot Sell
The Home Depot sells a whole bunch of things, but not white canes. That's why I thought the cashier was joking when she said, "Is that yours or did you get that here?" It wasn't until after we were out of the store that Eliz told me the cashier was being serious.
White Canes Connect Episode 2
Episode 2 of White Canes Connect is now complete. We had so much content, we broke it into two parts. Editing it was a nightmare from the start. None of the audio tracks were synced up with one another. In the end, though, I think it sounds good. Listen to White Canes Connect episode 2 and let me know what you think.
Brand Loyalty
I've had an American Express card since 1986. We have been incredibly loyal to the brand. It is our card of choice for over 35 years. Turns out, they don't seem to be as loyal to us and it all stems from a defective product from BJs Wholesale Club.

In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about watching the Wimbledon Men's Finals and Euro 2020 and what I missed seeing in each. I also talk about my visit to my retina specialist, Dr. Garg.
Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/134
I love watching sports and soccer is one of my favorites. I watch the English Premier League games all season long, and even some Bundesliga matches. My favorites are the soccer tournaments like Champions League, Euro, and the World Cup. There are the best of the best players involved in those games.
With Euro 2020 and the Men's Final at Wimbledon on the same day, I knew it was going to be a good day of sports on TV. I hadn't watched tennis in a while, so watching that I realized that I was missing a lot. It made me wonder if the major tournaments were also available on the radio. There, it would be easier for me to follow.
Soccer, on the other hand, was something I watch often. The one big difference is Premier League games don't end with penalties like Euro or the World Cup does. Watching the penalties by England and Italy, I had to wait for Eliz, the game announcers, or crowd reaction to know the result of most of the shots.
Between having trouble with the sports and some other issues I've been having, I was looking forward to my visit to Dr. Garg, my retina specialist. I've been worried that maybe I was having some sort of problem with it, as I had back in 2017 when it detached. Spoiler alert, it's not my retina.
Dr. Garg told me things looked good and that he was the least important of all my eye specialists. He told me the specialist I should see on a regular basis is Dr. Pro, my glaucoma specialist. When the eye is damaged from glaucoma, it can't be fixed.
I'll let you know in a couple of weeks how I made out.

In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about #NFB21, the National Federation of the Blind's National Convention. Like last year, it is virtual again this year. I also talk about the new white cane I received from the NFB and how Ziggy loved the shipping tube it came in. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/133
The National Convention always has a ton of things going on. For me, one of the things I do every year is help out in the NFB-NEWSLINE booth. The room I was in this year didn't have much traffic, so I got to speak to a couple of other NFB-NEWSLINE state co-ordinators. We talked about NFB-related things, general blind stuff, and sports.
Ziggy had a ball with the 60 inch tube my white cane came in. It was better to see his reaction to Jane when she came home. It was her first time home since moving back to her NYC apartment a couple weeks earlier. He was so happy to see her. He was equally as sad when she went home a few days later.
I look forward to #NFB22 in person in New Orleans next summer. Maybe I'll get to attend the entire convention unlike 2019 in Las Vegas. Thanks American Airlines. Listen to what happened in episodes 31 and 32.

In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about shopping for a new home security system that will be accessible to me, since most now use touchpads that are not tactile. I also talk about the new White Canes Connect show that I produce and co-host with Lisa Bryant. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/132
Some would ask why we need a home security system when we have Ziggy. Well, we want to keep him safe, too. Not to mention that he can be "neutralized" with a bag of baby carrots, broccoli, or bananas.
White Canes Connect isn't on any of the podcast directories, yet. You can listen to it or download it from the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania's website at http://www.nfbp.org/whitecanesconnect.

In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about going back to New York City for the first time in nearly a year to help Jane move into her new apartment. I also talk about finding a vendor for the Keystone Chapter of the NFB of PA t-shirt fundraiser. It has not been an easy task. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/131
Jane has been living with us since March, 2020, while continuing to work her NYC-based pr job. Paying rent on a NYC apartment the whole time. When she landed her new job, she was told she'd need to come into the office at least two days per week.
Since she's been vaccinated, she was comfortable with that and accepted the position at the agency she interned at just two years earlier. She hoped to have a little break in between her old job and new, but only had one day, Juneteenth.
That got Eliz and I scrambling on what to do with Ziggy while we were driving Jane back with all of her stuff. I remembered that someone I went to high school with had a business that took care of pets. So I contacted my old classmate, Lisa, at Family Style Pet Sitting (familystylepetsitting.com) and she was able to feed Ziggy lunch and dinner and take him out in the yard to do his business and play.
With Jane moved in, I was able to get back to concentrating on the Keystone Chapter t-shirts that I designed. I need to find a vendor with a decent price to help the chapter make a couple of bucks on the fundraiser. That is going to be easier said than done. The vendor I thought we'd be using and that I got a sample shirt made had a huge price increase.
So, if you do DTG printing and have various sizes of Irish green t-shirts in stocks and can sell them for $10 or less before freight, please let me know. Reach out via social media:

In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about missing the first in-person Philly Meetup for the Blind event post lockdown at a British-style pub I love in Philadelphia. I also talk about some retail/customer service problems I've encountered recently and how it reminds me of the things my dad taught me at an early age. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/130
The only good thing to come out of the astonishingly bad customer service from BJ's Wholesale club are the fond memories I have of my dad and working in his supermarkets in the summer when I was a kid. I would go into work with him in the morning and work until we went to lunch. Then he'd drop me at home and go back to the store. I was around 10 years old.
This is my ninth Father's Day without him, so the memories are all I have now. I'd love to hear stories about you and your dad. Reach out on social media:

In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I speak with Louie Voice Control app developer Pramit Bhargava about how he became visually impaired and what the catalyst was to create the app. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/129

In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about picking up our new Nissan Murano and being left out of the process on how to operate the various controls. While I don't need to know the functions involved with driving the vehicle, it would've been nice to know the particulars about the radio and climate control. It should also come as no surprise that once my iPhone was paired with the entertainment system, VoiceOver did not function at all. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/128
In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about shopping for a new SUV and how most of the controls that I'm interested in are not accessible. I love the buying process of a new car, but I hate buying a new car. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/127
In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about how a LinkedIn DM turned into this podcast outline with my second Moderna shot, a Celebration of Life event, and Global Accessibility Day among the topics. Of course, there is also a Ziggy story. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/126
