Ice coring in Antarctica

Listen Later

I made a quick edit of a rather rough fieldwork video showing how we take shallow snow and firn cores out in the field using a Kovacs corer.

You can see some ice lenses in this short core at the end. This was just one piece of a full 10.5m core. It takes some time but we get very valuable data on density, snow accumulation and melt from these cores. We're hoping to get quite a good range of cores from many different locations to be able to reconstruct the last 20 years over a smallish part (compared to the total sheer size) of Antarctica.
