Joy Gilfilen, Host of the iChange Justice Podcast, interviews Marc Santos of NobleGoldman.com about how "Regenerative Economics" is the next step in transforming the business of injustice. It is all about learning how to value humans inside an economic system that includes rebuilding our communities. At this point, the economy is enrolled in a degenerative pattern of exclusion for the benefit of the privileged interests that control the system.

To understand the complexity of the problem, we do a flashback into history.

Marc explains how changes in monetary policies going back to the 70s and the Friedman Doctrine changed the balance of power in our economies in the 80s and 90s, which is even more extreme today. It created a serious imbalance in favor of "shareholder supremacy," which has been deeply misrepresented and convoluted throughout our discussions in the civic square. This has led to extreme conflicts in so many ways that it is riddled with doublespeak, greed, and extreme civic trauma.

The negative impact is felt at every societal level - yet in the middle is a thread of common sense that we can use to heal the heartbreak as we reknit our society using restorative economic tools.

Joy Gilfilen, Host of the iChange Justice podcast, discusses the heartbreak people face when systems we are told to trust are not trustworthy. While humans caught inside the system feel the pain, and pay extraordinary costs...the hurts and traumas run so deep it is difficult to talk about. Gina is one of our clients caught inside the facade of justice r running through hopeless hoops of bureaucratic punishment faces depression, addiction, trauma, and suicide without help.

In this case, it took 5 years of irreconcilable paper violence to track how the gaps in the interlocking systems of law and justice creates obscured sandtraps of emotional, financial, and physical punishments. Penalties compound, and even contradict each other, and create Catch 22's the person cannot escape without help. Over time, the troubles become logjams that harm people. The system has no remorse or correction. She is lucky to have gotten out.

This talk unravels gaps in the Prosecutorial/Probation/Treatment programs. It is a problem of the 21st century as our communities have been fractured, societal networks and safety systems have cracked, the economy and technology problems contributed. Hired contractors don't fill in the gaps, and people become a commodity run through the hoops. Humans do not win.

Today it's about what you can learn from looking at jail roster statistics. How is it that out of 320 people in jail on April 21, 2023 that 35 of them have been in jail from a year to 2.5 years. They are unconvicted. What about "innocent until proven guilty?"

What does it matter? Jail stats can reveal the date of arrest, the type of bookings and time served, why they have charges pending and more. Every jurisdiction is different, so learning how to see information and ask questions is useful. The call is an eye-opener!

It's her story of feeling sandbagged - going from being a solid, working class to homelessness, jailing and 10 years of punishment for grief. Punished and penalized by a system that doesn't work.
Gina, was a working Mom finding out one day that her 29 year old son had committed suicide, that the family was being investigated and suddenly she is estranged from her granchildren...and what happened to her over the past 10 years.
Grief, depression, asking for help and not finding any. Helping dozens of other families avert suicides in their families...yet eventually falling into alcholism, a DUI, jailing...and the list accumulates. Yet the actual public health and safety net for real help is elusive.
Listen to what Gina says about what was needed, and how the gaps in the system could be filled. It's about avoidance - the side effects, heartbreak, depression and the consequences of not talking about "things people don't want to talk about". It has a price, and it is time we looked at it out in the open.

Today's episode of iChange Justice with Host Joy Gilfilen is a conversation with Jason McGill.  He is the Executive Director of Northwest Youth Services and talks about how business practices have changed over the past few years after Covid changed everything. 
Specifically, we address a phenomenon...that people are easily provoked to be hyper-reactive to speculative fear - fear that is not based on facts.  Our Coalition will be teaming up to host public education events.  Our goal is to discuss how we can all work together in our community in new ways to heal the fracturing that happened as a result of universal stress. 

Host Joy Gilfilen starts a discussion with other members of the Restorative CommUnity Coalition about how the media has been working with high-level elected officials to convince the public to buy a $150,000,000 sales tax plan to go into a lifetime of debt to buy a new jail based on jail industry speculation.

In the meantime, it puts the taxpayers in a real financial bind in the aftermath of the past three years of covid emergency conditions, extreme economic distress, and social trauma.

It is an eye-opener, for it shows in real time how infidelity and manipulation works in the jail industry at the local, grassroots level.

Then, by contrast, how can we reverse engineer the systems to be regenerative?
More importantly, what does it feel like to start seeing the patterns of fear-mongering and silencing that control so many parts of our lives, and what happens when we start looking "under the rugs" and seeing the challenges we face. In the short term, we discuss the awareness that comes as we realize that we have been shut down politically, socially, economically, and structurally in different ways the past few years, and the side effects of that on our culture.

As a wife of an incarcerated person herself, Kehaulani recently moved to Bellingham,
to be close to her husband when he was released from prison. Just weeks before release, suddenly the Department of Corrections closed down the DOC Work Release facility apparently due to conflicts in contract negotiations.

This meant that her husband was released into custody in Seattle and he got a job there,
Suddenly, for her to be with her husband, she was having to travel to see him, and now
they must renegotiate their entire family situation. The complications cost money,
time, and create a host of emotional ripple effects. Come hear 1st hand what just a few
