Dog, cat… or chicken? What’s actually in Chinese takeout? 🔬🥡

There’s been a rumor surrounding Chinese food for as long as I can remember — and one restaurant in my hometown has developed a reputation of its own. So instead of just repeating the rumor, I decided to investigate what I could actually observe.

I picked up sweet and sour chicken, pork chow mein, and chow mein noodles and put samples under the microscope at 40x, 100x, 400x, and 1000x.

Then, because this is The Visual Scientist, I introduced the samples to live rotifers to see how Roti handled Chinese takeout. 😂

Under the microscope, we found cooked muscle tissue, muscle-fiber structures, starch, oils, breading, and some incredible differences between the meat and noodles.

But then I went back through the sweet and sour chicken sample and found something I wasn't expecting.

I've examined a lot of food and meat on this channel, and I've never seen anything quite like it in one of my meat samples.

I'm not going to call it dog, cat, or anything else based on a microscope image. A microscope cannot determine what animal species cooked meat came from. And I value the people who subscribe and watch these investigations way too much to manufacture an answer just for clicks.

So we're taking this investigation one step further.

I'm sending the chicken sample to a lab for testing.

Just like with the McDonald's burgers, when those results come back, you guys are going to see them.

Because I don't want to guess what animal this came from.

I want to know.
