Pillar 2 of UNCAP: Mentors vs Sponsors and How to Engineer Your Perception

In this episode of the Iconic Life Podcast, Sam does a deep dive into pillar number two of the UNCAP framework: engineering how you are perceived, with a focus on the difference between mentors and sponsors. 

Mentors provide advice, perspective, and feedback, while sponsors actively advocate for you in rooms you are not in and help you get promoted; Sam shares that after years of having mentors but no sponsors, cultivating a first sponsor led to two promotions in one year. 

Sam outlines a three-step system to build sponsorship over 90 days: create a sponsor map of three senior leaders at least two levels above you, make the ask using “perspective” rather than “mentor,” and send a monthly three-sentence sponsor brief.

UNCAP Framework Pillar 1: Four Writing Moves to Make Your Work Visible Without Bragging

In this Iconic Life Podcast episode, the host deep-dives into pillar one of the UNCAP framework—making your work visible—arguing that many internationally trained professionals face a visibility, not competence, problem because their work doesn’t “travel” beyond their immediate team. 

He shares four leadership-focused, non-bragging moves that create compounding visibility through writing: 

(1) a Friday status update to your manager with three bullets—what you shipped, what starts next week, and one thing you need; 

(2) a win email within 24–48 hours of meaningful progress to your skip-level outlining what happened, why it mattered, and who contributed; 

(3) a monthly sponsor brief to a senior leader summarizing the last 30 days, next 30 days, and one request for perspective; and

Recognizing bias is one thing. Engineering how you're perceived despite it is another. In this episode of the Iconic Life Podcast, host Sam Shaibu discusses the crucial topic of recognizing and addressing bias and discrimination in the workplace without compromising your career. Sam explores the definitions, forms, and impact of bias and discrimination. He emphasizes the importance of identifying patterns of behaviour, evaluating company policies, listening to feedback, and analyzing data to uncover and address these issues.
