  • Adapting to the hybrid future of work

They say that the future of work is hybrid. However, some also feel that it is only short-term and, sooner or later, we will return to the old ways of working in the office. Well, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Moreover, the new way of working also entails hiring, remunerating, and progressing in careers and business.

And to explore this further, I am joined by Graeme Codrington from Johannesburg, South Africa.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • So how does the future of work really look like?
    • The prevalence of outcome-based workplace.
    • How does this impact innovation and communication? What would be the alternative?
    • Building healthy hybrid teams.
    • How do you see small dependent businesses pivoting?
    • Importance of culture of adaptability. How to measure it?

Graeme is a futurist and scenario planner specializing in the future of work. He helps companies worldwide understand the forces that are shaping our lives, whether it’s the current Covid-disruption or the disruptive trends that will define the rest of the decade. Graeme is the author of six best-selling books, and he lectures at many top business schools.

  • What are unwritten ground rules?

If you have ever worked in the office environment then you must have heard someone saying, "Well, this is the way we do things around here." There are so many things people do that are not necessarily part of the rule book. And yet, what you do, how you do can impact the culture you want to build.

These undocumented ways of doing things in a team environment are unwritten ground rules. And they do have a significant impact on the so-called documented cultural rule book.

Whether your goal is to improve communication, foster innovation, or drive change in your team, you cannot not pay attention to UGRs.

So in this episode, we will talk about unwritten ground rules and for that, I have Steve Simpson from Melbourne, Australia on the show.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • The UGRs concept
    • If they are unwritten, then how would you know they exist and influence them?
    • How do they tie with the culture of your team and organization?
    • Can people coming from different backgrounds influence UGRs? How?
    • How can you change the common language and nudge it to the positive side?
    • Shift in UGRs (if any) since Covid.
    • Examples of UGRs for an innovative culture.

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Steve Simpson is an international speaker and culture change agent. He created the one-of-a-kind UGRs concept in the mid-’90s, initially focused on helping companies understand that without a solid culture built on UGRs, their efforts to improve service would be best to improve service limited. Until March last year, Steve traveled the world, speaking at conferences and working with organizations to help them understand and strategically improve their culture. He's now gone virtual :-)

Besides already having achieved the highest accreditation in professional speaking a decade earlier, he earned the ultimate accolade for his groundbreaking work spanning five continents when Professional Speakers Australia bestowed on him its coveted 'Educator of the Year Award.' Steve has a Master's Degree from the University of Alberta (Canada). He is the author of two books and the co-author of two more, including ‘UGRs: Creating a Culture of Service’ and ‘A Culture Turned.’

  • Why is futures literacy important?

Futures Literacy is a concept that UNESCO first developed, and it means using the future to innovate the present. It isn't easy to adapt, innovate, and transform yourself if you cannot anticipate future scenarios. And the discipline of anticipation is futures literacy.

To discuss this further, today, we have Charlotte Kemp from Cape Town, South Africa, as a guest.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • The map, compass, and a guide model.
    • What is future literacy?
    • People talk (a lot) about adaptability - what's your take on it?
    • What can individuals and businesses (small and large) do in their capacity?
    • How to visualize your future before acting on it?
    • What is your view on negative thinking?
    • How can you learn more about this?

Charlotte is a member of the Association of Professional Futurists (APF). She also serves as the President of the Professional Speakers Association of Southern Africa and vice president of the Global Speakers Federation.

As a professional futurist, Charlotte works with organizations to co-create their preferred futures.

Every technology brings us two things - a promise of prosperity and consequences. Many of those consequences are the result of choices made by developers, and the ecosystem around them.

Having strong and effective governance for all such developments is crucial as the pace of development and changes increases. This week I am talking with Christina Larkin about the same.

    • How much can government policy impact?
    • What happens when cross-border solutions are deployed?
    • Red-tape challenges and antidotes.
    • Startups versus big companies - challenges of regulation and governance.

  • Podcast about podcast with Richard Midson

For some people, podcasting has somehow become a fad or a go-to format for content creation. However, there is a lot. Podcasting is one of the fantastic communication mediums and apparently suffers from the same perils as other mediums. The key is to get clear on the purpose and then experiment until you get it right.

Why and how to experiment? Well, that's the question I am asking Richard this week.

    We talk about:

    • What are a few different and legit reasons to start a podcast?
    • How to utilize it for networking?
    • What are the different styles of a podcast show?
    • Pros-cons and challenges of different styles.
    • How are these styles differently applicable based on your goals?
    • How can you mix-n-match different styles? Should you?
    • Why and how should you experiment with your podcasts?
    • The importance of podcast planning - what you must plan and what not?
    • How do you get audience feedback?

Richard Midson is a former career broadcaster and news editor for non-stop news radio in London (UK). He's a former YouTuber with a channel with over 1.6 million views, a former communications officer for the leader of the third-largest political group in the European Parliament, and a podcaster.

In 2020 after trying 5 podcasts with little success, he decided to turn his journalist past onto the world of podcasting to find out why so many people, including himself, struggled with the medium.

What he found is now delivered through his own podcast, in public talks, and workshops.

  • The brain and communication with John Molidor

Our brain is such a fascinating part of our body that everyone has it, but not everyone uses it effectively. There are so many myths about the brain, and they are wildly used as a part of communication. Which not only spreads misinformation but also challenges our credibility while communicating.

To bust some of those myths and understand better communication mechanisms, I have Dr. John Molidor on the show this week.

    We talk about:

    • The 10% utilization, neuroplasticity, and left-brain-right-brain a myth?
    • Do we really by emotionally and justify logically?
    • How should we communicate our ideas in the right way?
    • How long does it take to form a habit?
    • Why is physical note-taking so important?
    • The 10,000-hour rule myth.
    • How long does it take to make a first impression?
    • Several stages in communicating your message effectively.
    • The thing about odd numbers and your messaging when communicating.
    • How should you end your speech?

Dr. John B. Molidor, CSP, comes to us from the United States at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine, an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Education and Research.

Dr. John has a long-standing interest in the brain and how people use (and don't use), especially focusing on leaders, educators, and speakers!

He is the current President of the Global Speakers Federation and a Past President of the National Speakers Association (US). He loves applying neuroscience principles to communicate more effectively ... as well as busting speaking myths (or as he says, "Things presenters/speakers say, sometimes, without even thinking ... when they should be using their brains!"

He has authored the book Crazy Good Interviewing: How Acting A Little Crazy Can Get You The Job (published by Wiley and Sons) and available on Amazon.

An outlier is a person or thing differing from all other members of a particular group or set. But the outlier thinking is what makes it more interesting. It can lead the left-field behavior or outlier marketing.

    We talk about:

    • What is outlier marketing? What isn't?
    • How does an outlier marketer look like?
    • Can anyone do it? How about small businesses and startups?
    • What happens when two competitors resort to outlier marketing?
    • What are barriers to outlier thinking?
    • How does one consider geographical and digital challenges?
    • Does it fail? Why?

Innovation, communication, technology – a few key areas that are super important in today’s world. But no matter how much you talk about them, learn about them, and search about them, it doesn’t seem…
