In Episode 175 of Idea Diary - Today, I ramble about Sonny Bono. Iwoke up this morning to pick a band to do my morning music business research, create my CoffeeFilm for TikTok, and pick a song of the day for my IG Reels MixTape.

Today, I grabbed a Sonny & Cher album thinking I would probably end up picking a solo Cher song that I liked for my song of the day. But, as I listened to the entire album of "The Best of Sonny & Cher," one song stood out, "Laugh At Me"

It had beautiful poetic deep folk lyrics that I wasn't expecting, and a beginning grunge-y  vocal style that started appearing in bands like The Byrds & The Turtles. When rock was kind of changing from bright and sparkly to moody distortion. #1965

I watched some Sonny documentaries, and learned that he wasn't good at playing any instrument, or good at singing, but just loved music so much that he wouldn't give up until he had a music career. He wrote hit songs with one hand on the piano.

Seems like he did grunt work in recording studios and record labels. He gained a lot of experience in the music industry for 10 years before he met Cher. (about 10 years of grunt work with no real success seems to be a theme with successful people I research) Once Sonny met Cher, their rise to the top was fast. Then came a point he had reinvent himself again, because while Cher was becoming mega successful, Hollywood stopped answering his phone calls. That's when he decided to open a restaurant, which made him decide to be mayor, and then became elected to the house of representatives in California.
