This summer, on our podcast, Identity Unboxed, we have been busy gathering the stories that are important to you while celebrating the Black diaspora. Our platform has turned into a flourishing community, reaching from our home here in Seattle to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Atlanta, New Orleans, Florida and Connecticut.

For the past two seasons, we’ve seen the community show up to support our work and we are grateful to continue our mission of providing mentorship and promoting representation in a Black-centric space. We look forward to continuing to grow this multi-generational platform to share wisdom and highlight our unique experiences that influence how we show up in the world both personally and professionally.

In this special Pride Month bonus episode of Identity Unboxed, we flip the script. Co-host Tiana steps into the interviewer’s seat to have an intimate conversation with Brad about his personal journey of embracing his sexuality. Brad opens up about the childhood experiences that shaped him, the healing it took to find confidence in his identity, and what pride means to him today.

On our podcast, Identity Unboxed, we are committed to honoring Black history, sharing authentic Black stories, and providing mentorship and promoting representation for Black professionals. While this space has been curated to amplify those within our community we welcome all to listen and learn from Black professionals that have emerged as experts in their fields. From the C-suite and Olympic podiums to the operating room and university lecture halls, we spotlight journeys rooted in resilience meant to catalyze agents of change in our workplaces, communities, and beyond. We believe our stories are most effectively told by us.This project arose out of our desire to build community and find mentors that resembled our lived experiences. This prompted us to share these transformative conversations with you all. With each episode, we hope that you gain clarity in finding your purpose and inch one step closer to understanding how you can make a positive impact by getting resourceful and beginning where you are with what you have. Biography:

It’s one thing to be born with a gift. It’s another thing entirely to use it. Kenny Bednarek could’ve just been a kid from Wisconsin who ran fast. But this kid had a dream. And as we know, it’s the dreamers that make history.

“Coming from the foster care system, a community college, and the small town of Rice Lake doesn’t limit how great you can become. I want to be the best to ever do it, to give back to my community, and inspire the next generation.” - Kenny Bednarek

His actions are certainly proving him to be a man of his word. Ensuring his name became a legend, Bednarek captured the world's attention when he first claimed silver in the 200m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Following that monumental achievement, 2021 seemed like a victory lap for Kenny. Claiming four Diamond League wins in Lausanne, Zurich, Doha, and Gateshead, as well as another in the World Continental in Ostrava, Kenny was awarded 'Most Consistent Track and Field Athlete,' Diamond League Champion, and made history as the first sprinter to run sub-20 in ten wind-legal races in a single season.

Although he's encountered his share of difficulties, Kenny takes even hindrances in stride. Demonstrating his tenacity in 2022, he not only claimed silver in the World Championships 200m - just seven months after fracturing a toe – but also scored two Diamond League wins in Rabat and Rome. In 2023, shortly after suffering a grade two hamstring strain and a grade three fascia tear, he made the USA team and finished fifth in the 200m at the World Championships, followed by his complete domination in Brussels, where he earned the Diamond League title. With his injuries a thing of the past, Bednarek has shown us that a healthy Kenny is a dangerous Kenny.

With four personal bests and two coveted titles added to his collection, this is undoubtedly the best season of his career. We caught a glimpse of what Kenny had in store when he started the year with a 100m win in the World Continental Tour in Kenya, followed by a personal best of 19.67 and a tremendous win at the Doha Diamond League. Victorious yet again in the Prefontaine Diamond League, he achieved two more personal bests during the Olympic trials- clocking 9.87 in the 100m and 19.59 in the 200m. This was the first time Bednarek made all three teams (100m, 200m, and 4x100m) at the Olympic trials, and with the distinction of being a two-time Olympian, Kenny made sure he left the 2024 Paris Olympics decorated with silver for a second time in the men's 200m.

While it didn’t seem possible to top his already exceptional year, consistent with his character, Bednarek went on to attain his fourth personal best at the Zurich Diamond League with an incredible 19.57 in the 200m. To conclude a most magnificent season, Bednarek bolted to glory with a spectacular win at the Diamond League meet in Brussels and the distinction of being crowned the Diamond League Champion.

In any event, it has been truly remarkable to witness the rise and reign of Kung Fu Kenny. He's transformed from underdog to two-time Olympic silver medalist, ten-time Diamond League winner, World Championship Silver Medalist, two-time Diamond League Champion, World #2 in the men's 200m, and the silent warrior that's here and coming for it all.

Career Advice:

To be successful, there are three important things - hard work, discipline, and sacrifice. Most importantly if you enjoy whatever you’re doing, hard work won’t seem too hard after all. Believe in yourself. Stay humble. Help people around you. Give back to your community. Be yourself always!

In honor of Women’s History Month at Identity Unboxed, we are overwhelmed with gratitude to have shared space with history maker, Olympic gold medalist, and unparalleled talent, Alexis Holmes.

Biography:

Alexis is a celebrated professional track and field athlete from Hamden, Connecticut, whose remarkable achievements have left an indelible mark on the sport. As an Olympic gold medalist in the 4x400m relay and Olympic finalist in the 400m, Alexis has showcased extraordinary talent and resilience on the world stage. With accolades that include being a world indoor championships bronze medalist in the 400m and a world champion and previous world record holder in the mixed 4x400m relay, she continues to set new standards in athletics, inspiring countless athletes across the globe. Competing for Nike and Team USA, Alexis embodies the spirit of dedication and excellence. Her journey to success began at the University of Kentucky, where she earned a degree in public health. This academic background not only enhances her athletic performance but also fuels her passion for promoting health and wellness within her community. Beyond her personal accomplishments, Alexis is deeply committed to being a role model for young female athletes. Recognizing the importance of representation, she actively engages in mentorship and outreach initiatives, inspiring and empowering the next generation. Alexis emphasizes the value of hard work, perseverance, and self-belief, proving that with determination, anything is possible.

Career Advice:

As a 25-year-old black Olympic gold medalist, I want to emphasize the importance of self-belief in your journey. Trust in your abilities and remember that your unique experiences and perspectives are valuable assets. Challenges will arise, but it’s crucial to never give up; resilience is key to overcoming obstacles.

Biography:

Terry Metcalf was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. He made a name for himself in football at California State College, Long Beach, before moving on to play professionally. 

During his time in the NFL, Terry Metcalf was known for his versatility and explosive playing style. He accumulated over 3,400 rushing yards, 2,400 receiving yards, and thousands more as a kick and punt returner. He scored 36 touchdowns in total and still holds the record for the most games with 250 or more all-purpose yards (yards gained from rushing, receiving, and returns combined).

In 1975, he set an NFL record for total yards in a season, a milestone that stood for years. He was also the first player in league history to average over 30 yards per kickoff return and 10 yards per punt return in a single season, a rare achievement matched by only one other player decades later.

After his time in the NFL, Metcalf continued his career in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts, where he played for three seasons before briefly returning to the NFL in 1981.

Recognized for his contributions to the sport, he was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.

Terry now works as the Dean of Education at Rise Up Academy, an early learning program aiming to close the academic achievement gap.

Career Advice

“Your circumstances don't dictate your outcome in life or your success. Because I know every child comes through. I've worked with homeless children, couch-surfing children, children that come to school and haven't eaten. I still try to empower them with love, with confidence, and that they can be something. And not only that they can be something, but that they are something. They are a diamond in the rough and we are just here to get the coal off so they can shine.”

Biography (Kamal Carter):

Kamal Carter is a scientist, an activist, an educator and a management consultant. Kamal brings more than 25 years of corporate development and growth strategy experience. He has held multiple global leadership positions at leading companies. What he is most proud of is walking away from millions of dollars to serve as a high school chemistry teacher at an inner city school in Atlanta. For more than a decade, Mr. Carter has pioneered innovative strategies in education. He co-wrote a script for a PBS science show which he also stars in. He has been a National Institute of Health (NIH) Research Fellow and a member of the State of Georgia Superintendent's Teachers Advisory Council. Kamal graduated from Hampton University with a Biology Pre-Med degree. He turned down two full scholarships to medical school to pursue his passion in business, community development, and science education. Kamal Carter is chairman of the board of Step Ahead Scholars, Inc., a nonprofit he co-founded 10 years ago whose mission is to eradicate college access inequality

Biography (Kyle Williams):

Kyle Williams is a leader. Whether leading his three sons into manhood, leading a community-based elementary school in Washington, D.C., leading the #1 youth basketball program in the country, or leading this incredible team at A Long Talk, he has always been a leader. Raised in Plainfield, NJ, the son of Artie B. and Jocelyn, is a child of Hip Hop and a servant of the community. As a professional educator, Kyle has amassed over 25 years teaching children and adults alike. Highlighted by his time at the Community Academy Public Charter school where, in 1998, he applied and interviewed to serve as a volunteer and was “coerced” into accepting a provisional teaching position instead. After six short years of service in the classroom and on the school’s leadership team, he would be appointed as the school’s third Academy Leader in 2004. Following his 17 year career at CAPCS, he began working with Discovery Education helping teachers and school leaders all over the country make the shift to becoming more technology savvy, 21st century educators. Change and progress through educational empowerment has always been at the heart of the work he has done. He brings that same focus and energy to the fight for social justice and racial reconciliation as the Chief Empowerment Officer and creator of "A Long Talk About The Uncomfortable Truth."

Gird yourself with the courage and strength to always remain authentic.

Biography:

LaVoyce Ezell is a Seattle native, mother of two, and the eldest of twelve siblings. She proudly graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a BA in Communications. Currently, she serves as a Program Coordinator at the University of Washington and is a Real Estate Broker with Keller Williams.

In 2009, LaVoyce experienced the devastating loss of her daughter, LaYana, to sickle cell anemia. This profound tragedy led her into a period of deep sorrow and reflection. However, through unwavering faith, she discovered strength and a renewed sense of purpose. By 2018, she channeled her experiences into founding the Life Support Movement, a community platform that provides vital resources such as food subsidies, housing assistance, and transportation aid to those in need. The movement is built on the belief that a well-nourished body, educated mind, and inspired soul can overcome adversity. With a focus on uplifting individuals facing challenges, the Life Support Movement aims to instill hope, purpose, and opportunity while challenging negative stereotypes and perceptions.

LaVoyce’s guiding principle is 1 Corinthians 9:22, reflecting her commitment to compassion and understanding. Her personal journey has fostered a deep belief in the inherent value and potential of every individual. Driven by her mission to touch hearts and change lives, she is dedicated to celebrating and supporting life, always emphasizing the importance of community and compassion.

Career Advice:

Once you find your passion, serve with compassion and exercise discipline. I believe an effective leader has to experience the struggle (problem) firsthand in order to connect organically.

Biography:

Dr. Andre Dick is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Children's Hospital.  He is currently also serving as Surgical Director of the Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program.  in January of 2022, Dr. Dick was named Senior VP and Surgeon-in-Chief, after serving in an interim capacity since April 2021.

He was born in Jamaica and attended medical school at the State University New York School of Medicine. Dr. Dick fulfilled his residency at Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center and completed his fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center. In 2008 he joined both the University of Washington Department of Surgery and Seattle Children's Hospital as Assistant Professor of Surgery. Dr. Dick was promoted to Professor of Surgery in July 2022.

Dr. Dick has been board certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery since 2006. In 2011, he completed his Masters Degree in Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. He has served as the Region 6 Representative on the Pediatric Transplant Committee for the United Network for Organ Sharing UNOS/OPTN). Dr. Dick is also dedicated to the training and education of young surgeons. He previously served many years as the Transplant Fellowship Program Director at the University of Washington. In 2017, he was appointed Co-Chair of the Training and Fellowship Training Committee at ASTS (American Society of Transplant Surgeons), and is also a member of the Transplant Accreditation and Certification Council. Dr. Dick is a member of the Education Committee of IPTA (International Pediatric Transplant Association) since 2016 and is currently serving a two-year term on the IPTA Council.Dr. Dick's clinical interests include liver, kidney, and pancreas transplant and hepatobiliary surgery. His research is focused on obesity and its effects on transplant outcomes and on healthcare disparities in transplantation.

Career Advice:

As one of the few Black surgeons at Children’s and the UW, I hope my being in this role will shine as a beacon so other people can say, “I can also accomplish that.” I want to create a path for those who follow after me.
