November 19, 2016In Conversation with Coco Schrijber. IDFA Industry Talk 18 November 2016Coco Schrijber studied at the Rietveld Fine Arts Academy in Amsterdam, majoring in audiovisual studies. Her first feature-length documentary First Kill dealt with addiction to killing. It won the critics' prize at the Netherlands Film Festival and was selected for the IDFA Competition for Feature-Length Documentary in 2001. Her film Wonderful World won six international awards and Bloody Mondays & Strawberry Pies earned her a Golden Calf award, the Dutch equivalent of the Academy Awards; it was also the official Dutch entry for the Oscars. In her internationally praised documentaries, Schrijber is known for approaching her subjects from unexpected angles and tackling abstract subjects such as the beauty of war or the upsides of boredom, resulting in essay-like films with a bite. Her unbridled imagination and cinematic instinct can result in disturbing stories that turn the viewer into an uneasy voyeur.
