Games are great tools for learning.  And just so we're clear, designing games for learning is very different from gamification.  Learning is a large part of all games, but building a game with the specific intent of teaching a specific concept, idea or process, is not easy.  

Myra Roldan created a game to teach about the basics of blockchain.  And if you're asking yourself what the heck is blockchain, then this episode, and the game, are for you.  

The game is temporarily titled: LearnCoin (for now).

She is creating a blockchain game with the objective of teaching L&D and others how blockchain works. To build knowledge of the inner working so that team and individuals can be thinking of potential use cases and applications in learning. She is currently prototyping the game and it will evolve as she play tests with people in industry.

Engaging Learners in learning content is every instructional designer's goal.  Why is it so hard to do? Why do so many instructional designers struggle to make engaging learning experiences?

Systems Thinking is the skill or ability to solve problems in complex systems.  Hey! That sounds like a lot of the work done by instructional designers!  Sometimes, yes. But not always.  In many cases we learn about the learners by building personas, and we learn about the content from subject matter experts and the actual tasks of the job.  But what about all the other elements that are a part of that learners complete, and complex environment?

Luckily, in this episode of IDIODC, Qian Feng joins us to discuss systems thinking and how it applies, or should apply more heavily, within our systems of instructional design. Qian will share her passion for systems thinking in L&D and why we need to look beyond our immediate circle of influence and understand the wider systems in which employees are working. We should consider other parts of their system like the culture, the norms, the org structure, processes, and more, in order to design impactful learning that sticks.

As an added bonus Qian will share some amazing insights from her work on the systemic exploration of the relationship between media and the pandemic from her recent report titled Going Viral: Fighting Pandemics in the Age of Infodemics. There are some insightful connections that will help us understand the importance of system thinking in creating our learning solutions.

Storyboarding is a basic skillset often overlooked by instructional designers and project managers.  For many developers the storyboarding process is bypassed in favor of building an eLearning "proof of concept".  This is great for developers given the storyboarding task, and for one-person ID teams to optimize their project processes. However, storyboarding is a valuable skill for everyone to learn. 

Storyboarding can be used to communicate ideas and concepts in more powerful ways with stakeholders and clients to increase understanding and overall chances of project success.  Sketching interaction ideas/concepts can also improve communications between designers and developers.

Learning is often seen as a solo endeavor. But in reality our learning requires input from others.  Sometimes that input comes from an instructor, and sometimes from your peers.  However, input and engagement from management during training sessions, and as part of the overall learning process, is often overlooked, or viewed as not necessary.

Managers want their employees trained but are often under a lot of pressure to "get them back to work".  Their business objectives will always take priority over the training objectives.  By integrating managers into the learning deployment they become involved in the process, understand the learning strategy, and can become strong advocates of your training solutions instead of being barriers.

So you want to be a CLO? Are you sure? Do you really know what it means to be a CLO?

"A chief learning officer (CLO) is the highest-ranking corporate officer in charge of learning management. CLOs may be experts in corporate or personal training, with degrees in education, instructional design, business or similar fields.
Qualified CLOs should be able to drive the corporate strategy and align the development of people with the business goals of the organization. A full complement of skills, including business analytics, technology, learning theory, performance consulting and scientific inquiry, are important for success.[1]
