Idling In The Impala | a ride through SPN fandom and fanfiction

There’s gonna be soooo much banging in this author interview! Sandra and Kasey would tell you to get your minds out of the gutter, but really, who are they kidding? They’re right there with you.

Sal, known as SamandDean76 in the Supernatural corner of fandom, went all in posting fics on AO3 back in late 2022 and hasn’t looked back. In only a few years, she’s shared over 240 works that very often highlight her love of Sam; but she makes room in her stories to include, according to her tumblr bio, “the rare pairs [who] have a soft spot in my multi-shipping heart.”

Get ready for an in-depth conversation about Sam, Supernatural, shipping, and story scheduling!

You can find Sal on tumblr and AO3.

Today’s subject matter in Sex Education with Kasey and Dreamer is General Realism.

The agents of chaos and kink and filth and depravity are back, y’all! Kasey and Dreamer asked Idling’s Discord server for some topics to address in a lesson. After quite a few thoughts tossed about, their smut-deducing skills picked up on a lot of subjects that fit into General Realism. Fic writing is first and foremost fantasy, but what if you want to sprinkle in a little factual knowledge? No worries, this episode and the impeccable research of our agents, along with plenty of references and citations, got you covered!

Squick Disclaimer: Some topics discussed may be uncomfortable for listeners. The discussion is intended for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered medical advice.

Podfic Narration Time – “Celestial Requiem” by EldritchLibertine

This WIP (at least at the time of this publication) by Ke is an epic OFC tale placed directly in canon right from the first season of Supernatural. It’s a slow burn, Castiel x OFC laden with additional angelic grace by one Archangel Gabriel. I was hooked at the start with the theme of found family and the heavy dose of surrogate father, Bobby Singer. Since I wouldn’t be able to read the entire story, I asked Ke for a chapter suggestion (Note: Sorry to disappoint any CasLovers, but he hasn’t arrived in the story yet at this stage of the narration). Enjoy!

Visit the fic on AO3 and give it a kudo and comment - it deserves a ton of praise!

Summary:

• Before humanity, God created perfect companions for each of His Archangels - not angel, not human, but something gloriously unique and designed to be the source of new angelic life. However, following Lucifer's rebellion, God's wrath was terrible and swift, and he separated these companions from the Archangels, casting them to Earth, cloaked in mortality and cursed to endless rebirth, their true nature hidden even from themselves. Angels were forbidden from seeking them, leaving both sides to endure an unspoken, cosmic grief.

• —

• When Reed Savoy was six years old, demons brutally slaughtered her family, leaving her the sole survivor. Rescued by Bobby Singer, she was taken in and raised as a hunter, unaware of her true nature. Now, at 28, Reed finds herself dragged into the Winchester's lives as they face danger from all sides.

On this episode, Sandra and Kasey are chatting with Ke, known as EldritchLibertine on AO3 and tumblr. Ke’s watched Supernatural for years but only recently dived into SPN fandom and writing about the show’s characters. Sandra discovered one of Ke’s fics, Celestial Requiem (OFC x Castiel), which tackled the considerable undertaking of weaving her OFC throughout show seasons. Her focus on the theme of family and spotlighting Bobby hooked Sandra in from the start. Have a listen to learn about Ke’s Supernatural journey, her writing style and methods, as well as her most recent favorite blorbo (no, it’s neither brother nor Castiel).

Rhi, known in fandom writing circles as kittenofdoomage, has been posting fics on AO3 since 2016 and is one of the most prolific reader-insert writers around. She writes for many fandoms, but Supernatural makes up the bulk of her stories, which total well over a thousand! If you love Alpha/Beta/Omega dynamics, you could survive quite happily on a diet of her fics for, well, forever.

Sandra and Kasey had such fun with a Reader-Insert icon!

If kittenofdoomage hasn’t gotten her claws into you yet, you can find her work on tumblr and AO3.
