One of the most important things we can understand as people of faith is that when we ask God for wisdom, it should not be because of the benefits that might come with it. Too often, people pray for wisdom hoping that it will lead them to wealth, success, influence, or recognition. But the real purpose of wisdom is much deeper than that. Wisdom is meant to guide our hearts, shape our choices, and allow God to use us for His purpose.

When we look at the story of King Solomon in the Bible, we see a powerful example of this truth. Solomon is known as one of the wisest men who ever lived. When God appeared to him and asked what he desired, Solomon did not ask for riches, power, or long life. Instead, he asked for wisdom so that he could lead God’s people with understanding and fairness.
Because Solomon’s request pleased God, God gave him wisdom beyond measure. But that was not all. God also blessed him with wealth, honor, and influence unlike any king before him. Solomon became incredibly prosperous. His kingdom flourished, his reputation spread across nations, and people traveled from far away just to hear the wisdom that God had given him.

At first glance, this seems like the perfect story. A man asks God for wisdom, God gives it to him, and with it comes riches and power. But when we continue to read the story of Solomon’s life, we learn something very important. Even with all the wisdom God gave him, Solomon was still human, and he still struggled with temptation and disobedience. God had clearly warned the kings of Israel not to marry many women, especially foreign women who worshipped other gods. The reason for this warning was simple. God knew that these relationships could lead the king’s heart away from Him. Unfortunately, Solomon did not follow that command.
