How can we move beyond life's blows? Byron, "Soulja," and William, "Wild Child," talk with trauma healer Denise Colette Lamoureux about how she healed from early childhood abuse, life-long anxiety, and later turning to Chardonnay as her first therapist and healer, which she says was a very "bad Idea." Her journey takes us to unexpected places and offers examples about how she discovered the way "home."

Hosts of the award-winning If You Only Knew the Half podcast interview Massachusetts licensed clinician Hannah Laflin about her work supporting people seeking substance-use treatment, especially young women facing trauma, trafficking, domestic violence, and barriers like limited resources for pregnant women. The conversation draws on the hosts’ lived experience with long-term homelessness and shelters, describing how systems and resource shortages can cycle people back into crisis and expose them to drugs and violence. Hannah explains that a “good day” is when someone asks for help and she can connect them to therapy, healthcare, detox, or benefits, and she also educates healthcare providers to identify trafficking and abuse. They discuss faith, resilience, misplacement of clients in inappropriate treatment, and the value of community, ending with plans for a part two and a song about survival and dreaming beyond poverty.

Here is how Susie describes the episode:
If you’ve ever struggled and wanted to quit, watch this.
Nearly 2 decades ago, a 2’10” man from the projects in NYC’s Bronx, who sat in his wheelchair at the corner of 60th & Madison doing what he called work each day, asked me to coach him in a triathlon. He became the first quadruple amputee to attempt or complete a triathlon and we achieved it with an amazing team at John Korff’s New York City Triathlon in the summer of 2007.
Recently, Soulja invited me to his podcast. I had no idea what the questions or format would be. Here it is!
