The avocado is the food that unites a nation but could it be facing the political fight of its life? From guacamole and chips at fast food chains to wellness bloggers and movie stars – avocados are eaten by all demographics in the US. The little fruit are big big business with about four billion consumed a year. But, the US consumer’s appetite depends on imports and the biggest producer is directly south of the border – Mexico. With uncertainty over Nafta (North America Free Trade Agreement) and no weakening of President Trump’s rhetoric over the douthern Border, is the avocado facing a less certain future.

Eind dit jaar loopt een grootscheeps wetenschappelijk onderzoek af dat daar antwoord op moet geven. Nu de onderzoekers in de afrondende fase zijn beland, laat Luuk Heezen zich door hen uitleggen hoe verweven de slavernij met het dagelijks leven aan het einde van de 18e eeuw in Nederland was. - De horlogemaker, de politica en de democratie: De generatie- en buurtgenoten Jürgen Schneider (31-12-1943) en Gisela Kallenbach (28-3-1944) lopen ieder op hun eigen manier uit de pas in de Deutsche Demokratische Republik. Schneider vecht voor zijn zelfstandigheid als horlogemaker, terwijl in de communistische staat van ambachtslieden wordt verwacht dat je niet voor eigen rekening werkt. Kallenbach is milieuactiviste en besluit dat haar kinderen geen lid mogen zijn van de communistische jeugdbeweging waar ieder kind automatisch lid van werd. Als het uurwerk van Kallenbach kapot is, repareert Schneider het.  In het verenigde democratische Duitsland sluiten ze zich aan bij hetzelfde buurtcomité. Kallenbach wordt politica voor de Grünen en Schneider past zijn winkel aan de westerse maatstaven aan. Maar nadat de horlogemaker een column krijgt in het wijkblaadje staan Schneider en Kallenbach ineens lijnrecht tegenover elkaar. Was ist da schief gelaufen?  Samenstelling: Joost Wilgenhof

Right-wing groups like the Proud Boys say they have no tolerance for racism or white supremacist groups. Their leader Gavin McInnes disavowed the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. But the Proud Boys believe “the West is the best,” which, one of them points out, is not such a big jump from “whites are best.” And one of the Proud Boys organized the Charlottesville rally. (The group now claims he was a spy.) What should we make of groups like this?

Johan bestämmer sig för fly på egen hand, mitt under den pågående väpnade konflikten i landet. It is Saturday morning in Pontianak in West Kalimantan in Indonesia, at a songbird competition. In every district across Indonesia you will find these, large and small. This passion for birdsong has swept the country since it was encouraged in the 1970s, by a government keen to build a new leisure activity for Indonesians. But what was once a solitary and poetic pastime, having a songbird in your house or garden, has become an industry in which real money can be made by training a winning bird. It is one of the biggest threats to Indonesia’s forests which have gradually fallen silent as millions of birds every year are trapped and sold illegally. Can the forest survive without birds?

The United States is the only country to sentence children to full life terms in prison. In many states, until recently, under-18s convicted of certain crimes were automatically locked up for life without the possibility of parole. But the US Supreme Court has now banned those mandatory sentences – and the approximately 2,000 Americans who were given them stand a chance of getting out. Elizabeth Davies travels to the United States to meet some of those given life sentences as teenagers. How are they dealing with the prospect of freedom after believing they’d spend their entire lives in prison?
