This side of heaven, grief is a frequent visitor. This seminar will examine these themes in Philippians to encourage our perseverance in heavenly minded joy in the midst of our own hardships.

From Acts and the epistles, we see ugly struggles in the early church – even among Christians, and I have weathered sometimes severe conflicts in three of the five churches I pastored. There is a strong impulse among Evangelical and Reformed Bible expositors to read Scripture through a Christocentric interpretive lens. Despite that this principle of interpreting Scripture arises from a sincere desire to honor Christ, it nevertheless undermines the normal grammatical-historical hermeneutic. Thus, Christocentric interpretation is almost certain to wreak devastating results and risks leading even the most well-meaning biblical expositor to commit hermeneutical malpractice.
