Welcome to another episode of Let's Talk Human Rights! For this episode we had the pleasure of talking with Marthine Bos. Marthine is a medical anthropologist / social nurse who specializes in training professionals wishing to speak about taboos within other cultures, especially topics surrounding sexuality and female circumcision.

In this episode, we discussed Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). According to the World Health Organization, FGM is still practiced in over 30 countries around the world, with an estimated 200 million girls and women having been subjected to this practice.

We touched on Marthine's experiences working in various African countries and what inspired her to go into the direction of Human Rights advocacy before moving onto background information about FGM. We then discussed what efforts are being done in the Netherlands and Internationally to combat and help survivors of FGM, before going into some reasons as to why it is still practiced today, why this logic is inherently flawed, and what we can do to further educate ourselves.

Welcome to another episode of Let's Talk Human Rights! For this months episode we had the pleasure of talking to Marlies Hesselman. Marlies is a lecturer of international law at the University of Groningen, and also working on her Ph.D on the topic of “Universal access to Modern Energy Services in International Human Rights Law”.  Her expertise resides in areas such as international & European human rights law, socioeconomic human rights law, and energy poverty. We discussed a wide variety of topics, from the legal groundwork that protects the right to health to the outlook of the climate crisis.

The episode is split into a 2 part series, with this being the 2nd part. In part 2 we talked about the outlook of the climate crisis for the next decade, as well as the different commitments governments have made to slow the impact of climate change. We also get into Target 7.1 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to lift over 3 billion people out of 'energy poverty' by ensuring a first connection to electricity or gas for basic daily necessities and to clean cooking facilities. Finally, we talk about ways in which people can further educate themselves.
