IGL Reviews Tom Clancy’s The Division | Infinite Grenade Launcher | Level 203

Hosts Tim and Justin engage in video game battle together again – this time with new Xbox One Tom Clancy title (also available in PS4), The Division. Right off the bat, The Division offers a new gaming experience that includes queuing up in game to play and is very different from Destiny, with which it’s mostly being compared.

About the game:

Tom Clancy’s The Division is an online-only open world third-person shooter video game developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, with assistance from Red Storm Entertainment, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was announced during Ubisoft’s E3 2013 press conference, and was released worldwide on 8 March 2016. The Division is set in a near future New York City in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic; the player, who is an agent of the eponymous Strategic Homeland Division, commonly referred to as simply “The Division”, is tasked with helping the group rebuild its operations in Manhattan, investigate the nature of the outbreak, and combating criminal activity in its wake. The Division is structured with elements of role-playing games, as well as collaborative and player versus player online multiplayer.
The game received positive reviews, and was a commercial success, with Ubisoft stating that the game broke the company’s record for highest number of first-day sales. Furthermore, one week after the game’s release, Ubisoft stated that The Division was the company’s best-selling game, and the industry’s biggest first-week launch for a new game franchise, which generated an estimated amount of $330 million globally.

Game review:

Overall, the game can be enthralling, exhausting and entertaining. It balances its obsessive systems with action, and then provides quiet moments to recover, to let the tension build again.
We’re early in the development of this whole genre, so some of the negatives are to be expected. The game does have a few technical glitches (evidenced by the amazing sight of players having to queue to use the computers in a safe house, or our experience at the top of the game), but it’s trying something new and that’s a huge undertaking.
We’re most excited to see how this world will evolve once enough players have completed all the current missions and find themselves scavenger hunting in a anarchic wasteland. Even at this early stage though, The Division is an experience that’s worth having if you’re at all interested in mainstream action games, or role-playing adventures, or co-operative online play.
Tim and Justin continue to explore new levels equipped with humor and an insatiable thirst for the ultimate gaming experience. Stay tuned to Hollywood Redux for more Infinite Grenade Launcher Twitch sessions, reviews, podcasts, and more!
